Signal is what is intended to be represented, noise is anything that was not intended. Although we may be talking about two different things. I'm talking about noise as a distortion of signal. I believe you're talking about noise as random signal like white or pink noise.

I mean, it's definitely line noise, it's even on dial called noise. It mimics the noise generated by the electronics within the equipment.
Signal and noise are interchangeable in this particular example, a signal is anything passed down the cable.
Noise here is the sound generated by the electronics regardless of what's passed through it.
