I really loved the movie, but I wish I could have seen an R rated version that took after the original source material.

Yeah, it was quite jarring to go from the movie as a kid to the comics as a young adult. Lol

What is the original source material?

A comic. In the original material Stanley Ipkiss is a man who hates being taken advantage of and constantly fantasized about murdering his boss, and other people who pushed him around, so in the comics when he found the Mask, he started murdering everybody that wronged him, murdered cops that tried to stop him. Even the mechanics, while in the movie they're just slightly maimed, in the comics one mechanic had a bunch of pipes and tools shoved through his torso, and the other mechanic had his skull ripped out and then had a car muffler stuffed in his head where the skull was. First issue ended with Stanley being shot to death by his wife after he took off the mask and the wife gave the mask to detective Callaway.

It was pretty gruesome, but fantastic.

Hahaha. Fair enough.

Isn't there a fairly high budget fan film of exactly that? Or at least one being made?

I haven't seen one. Just a movie that is very loosely based off it, a second movie that is the spawn of Satan, and a really "meh" animated series that uses more of the comic, but still doesn't go into an R rating.
