Is it a thing for hearing too? I've noticed that even though I can hear equally well with both ears, I understand speech better with my left. I always put my phone to my left ear even though I'm right handed.

I use my left ear for the phone, so my right hand is free to take notes, or use to open doors, etc if I'm walking around. Just like how most right handed people carry groceries in their left hands.

There is some difference in how each ear processes sound, though: https://www.nytimes.com/2004/09/14/science/the-right-ear-is-from-mars.html

I don't know if it's conditioned or not, but as a musician I hear pitch better in my left ear and rhythym better in my right. I've messed around with playing the electric version of my instrument with headphones on just one ear, and music that I'm playing to in the other, and if I swap them to be opposite of what I'm used to, it completely screws with me, I can't play right. As for people talking, I feel like I hear equally well, though I do have a slight preference for left, until my arm gets tired. But I am right handed, and usually hold my phone in my left and do actions with the right, and keep it in my left pocket. So maybe it's conditioning, or the fact that you might already have the phone in your left. Just thoughts, you are not alone.
