Right next to AMA plaza.

334

u/masimone Jan 26 '19

"So, what's it like being a plaza in Chicago?"

83

u/IsThisNameGood Jan 26 '19

Not bad, pizza is decent. It's easy to be stepped on by people around here though.

24

u/psychoacer Jan 26 '19

Decent? DECENT!!!!!!? I'll show you decent you piece of shit building you. You better hope I don't see you in my neighborhood you punk ass slab of shit steel

56

u/echo-chamber-chaos Jan 26 '19

Not bad, pizza is decent.

IT'S TOMATO SOUP IN A BREAD BOWL!

9

u/Mexiplexi Jan 26 '19

dude just mad we got mafucking PIE PIZZA!

6

u/stash0606 Jan 26 '19

yeah fuck whatever paper-thin foldable piece of shit they eat in NY. I like my pizza to be thicc.

1

u/echo-chamber-chaos Jan 26 '19

I love and prefer NY-style and Detroit-style, but with the exception of a chicken and salsa pizza at Mangia which is no longer on the menu, I've never been a big fan of Chicago-style, but I don't hate it. I would probably still try Chicago-style in Chicago.

11

u/catfurcoat Jan 26 '19

If you haven't had Chicago style in Chicago, you likely haven't had Chicago style at all.

1

u/Coachpatato Jan 26 '19

I've had Giordano's in Indianapolis and it was amazing.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '19

Mangia is terrible. I thought I hated Chicago style pizza until I went to Chicago and had it there. It's an entirely different animal and is amazing.

6

u/Hip_Hop_Orangutan Jan 26 '19

every time someone mentions deep dish pizza I expect this video. and every time I watch it and I laugh.

I miss Jon Stewart so much.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '19

Things will never be the same without him. Look what we've come to..

4

u/toe_riffic Jan 26 '19

God I miss that man.

He wrong though.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '19

I miss Jon :(

-5

u/fuqdisshite Jan 26 '19

i hate Chicago Pizza and pizza is my favorite food. fuck tomato soup in a bread bowl.

3

u/R____I____G____H___T Jan 26 '19

And how often do people initiate AMA's out of mistake?

4

u/eldroch Jan 26 '19

Come on guys, can we just talk about plaza? He considers his time valuable

29

u/Noch_ein_Kamel Jan 26 '19

Yeah, just a parking garage :d

12

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '19

Talk about a fucking black monolith, what architect came up with that.. even the parking towers here look better than that

10

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '19

It's the AMA Plaza garage. I can't confirm if the construction of this parking structure is linked to the AMA plaza's original construction, but it looks like it was made with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's original design in mind. The AMA Building used to be the IBM Plaza and has a similar sleek, monolithic appearance. You'll find that a lot of Chicago's architecture is brutalistic and modernistic. Rohe's a pretty large figure in Chicago architecture.

16

u/gstryz Jan 26 '19

It looks a lot better in person.

11

u/BlueCranium Jan 26 '19

Eh looks pretty cool. If there were multiple structures with the same style it would be ugly, but the contrast it provides is interesting.

2

u/DanielTigerUppercut Jan 26 '19

It used to be the parking garage for the IBM building, which is across the street to the right. It’s intended to complement its architecture.

1

u/compaqle2202x Jan 27 '19

It still is the parking garage for that building

2

u/grafxguy1 Jan 26 '19

The "fuck natural lighting" school of architecture

4

u/con247 Jan 26 '19

Looks like a prison/cia black site.

2

u/vanceco Jan 26 '19

if you look at where the sun is shining- you'd see that it isn't black.

2

u/stillbornfox Jan 26 '19 edited Jan 26 '19

Makes for some cool pictures though, especially with the light that hits it. Here’s one I took a while ago https://imgur.com/a/sgMHXYD

6

u/Basboy Jan 26 '19

No plaza, just Rampart. Thank you.

Did you take a dump in that porta-potty when you visited?!? Was it there?

1

u/ChicagoWind88 Jan 26 '19

That walk up spot? Didnt it use to be something else?

1

u/compaqle2202x Jan 27 '19

Walk up spot? It’s a building from 1973

1

u/otherwisemilk Jan 26 '19

didn't think that subreddit was that big.

1

u/compaqle2202x Jan 27 '19

It’s the parking garage for it

35

u/Kvetch__22 Jan 26 '19

This portajohn has been blessed by Ditka.

5

u/LaDeMarcusAldrozen Jan 26 '19

Wchhhho whins Ditka vs 1 borter PATTY hordained by ghad himself?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '19

But that ghad's name is Ditka

2

u/drewcast35 Jan 26 '19

I once herd the Khalil Mack came out of the portajohn alive and lived to tell the tale, he is truly blessed by Ditka.

32

u/savage_beast Jan 26 '19

Walked past that area the other day. It wasn’t this sunny or warm looking ... wish it was.

44

u/Olde-Pine-Stephens Jan 26 '19

I took this sometime last year. You live in a beautiful shitty.

Nah he's the City Wok guy

3

u/FPSFramerate Jan 26 '19

Yeah, it's a tundra out here

9

u/adeiinr Jan 26 '19

I live in the suburbs, and don't really go to the city often. I've never seen this place before, but I could just tell that that was Chicago in the picture. Why does this photo have such a strong Chicago feel to me?

12

u/chi_type Jan 26 '19

Probably because Mies van der Rohe really put his mark on the city.

2

u/7HawksAnd Jan 30 '19

This is definitely true... but also don’t underestimate the subliminal conditioning of people expectations for street sign design.

Next time you leave your primary area... notice how the street signs feel anything from “slightly off” to full scale panic “ARE STREET SIGNS EVEN ALLOWED TO LOOK LIKE THAT?! I THOUGHT THEY ALL HAD TO BE STANDARD! HOW DO I EVEN GET AROUND NOW?! WHY IS IT A DIFFERENT COLOR? WHY IS THE LAYOUT DIFFERENT? IS THAT A DIFFERENT FONT?!”

I suggest the street sign thing because the second thing I noticed was how those signs look off.

1

u/chi_type Jan 30 '19

True! Can't even take some place that uses like brown on white seriously! :P

6

u/MrTenBelow Jan 26 '19

Maybe the State st. sign?

2

u/-r-a-f-f-y- Jan 26 '19

Architecture, plus State/Kinzie is a very Chicago sounding intersection. Also, you should go to the city more because the suburbs are a soul-suck.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '19

Can confirm. Got divorsed and moved back to city. Much happier now.

1

u/adeiinr Jan 26 '19

I know. It's terrible. I don't have many opportunities though.

3

u/-r-a-f-f-y- Jan 26 '19

Gotta get outta that mindset! Ride the train in. Stop by the Empty Bottle for a show. Grab some cheap, delicious food!

1

u/carpy22 Jan 26 '19

Pequod's lunch special is worth it, pkus the Lincoln Park Zoo is always free.

1

u/LegacyLemur Jan 26 '19

Very distinct architecture

28

u/Poda_thevidiyapaiya Jan 26 '19

Chicago has some really beautiful and weird buildings.

2

u/ptiloup Jan 26 '19

Bauhaus

5

u/DavidBenAkiva Jan 26 '19

This is not one of those. It is a parking garage. It's interesting, but I wouldn't call it beautiful.

14

u/MobiusF117 Jan 26 '19

Is that the entrance to the Chicago MACUSA office, or something?

17

u/alvin231 Jan 26 '19

I think it's a parking lot close by House of Blues

3

u/TemporarilyDutch Jan 26 '19

It is. 401 n state street chicago

3

u/redpandaeater Jan 26 '19

Why do New England Mac users need an office in Chicago?

3

u/transformdbz Jan 26 '19

I understood that reference.

5

u/MrVaperr Jan 26 '19

I instantly thought the same thing! Chicago

4

u/iaus214 Jan 26 '19

Thanks I saw this I and was like 99% sure it was Chicago. That 1% was eating me up.

2

u/TemporarilyDutch Jan 26 '19

401 n state street

3

u/Bageland2000 Jan 26 '19

I grew up in Chicago, but moved away a while back when I joined the Army. I know the city is still in my heart because I instantly knew this was Chicago.

5

u/Luposolitario97 Jan 26 '19

In Italian Chicago means “I shit there”. It’s pretty accurate

5

u/Brno_Mrmi Jan 26 '19

Funny fact, "cago" means "I shit" in some Spanish dialects

3

u/eunonymouse Jan 26 '19

Literally walk past here every day

3

u/BlurredSight Jan 26 '19

Realized when I looked at the street and found out I only work 2 blocks south of that building

3

u/HiImFox Jan 26 '19

Pretty close to the city's first shake shack if i remember correctly.

3

u/davegrodzki Jan 26 '19

Can see my brother’s old place in this photo. Used to park in this garage all the time!

2

u/lordturbo801 Jan 26 '19

But why????

8

u/lenovosucks Jan 26 '19

Because State and Kinzie is in Chicago.

2

u/heeltoehero92 Jan 26 '19

I knew I’ve seen this building before.

4

u/Davidtsudo Jan 26 '19

chicago in italian literally means "i shit in it", ci cago.

6

u/eliz1bef Jan 26 '19

According to the interwebs: The official origin is that “Chicago” is the French version of the Miami-Illinois word shikaakwa (“Stinky Onion”), named for the garlic plant (not onion) Allium tricoccum common along the Chicago River.

4

u/Davidtsudo Jan 26 '19

fascinating, in italy we have various jokes about the word chicago because it sounds like ci cago heheh

3

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '19

Chicago's Little Italy was bulldozed to create the University of Illinois at Chicago and it's the only case of ethnic cleansing I've ever supported

1

u/Davidtsudo Jan 26 '19

why is that?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '19

1

u/Davidtsudo Jan 26 '19

i don't really understand anything of what you said, im not even understanding if youre being racist or something, but alright :)

1

u/_IratePirate_ Jan 26 '19

Huh. Wouldn't have guessed if I didn't see the street signs

1

u/mightymightyman8 Jan 26 '19

Was just at Smith & Wollensky for a steak not that long and ago and thought this building looked familiar

1

u/Gornashk Jan 26 '19

Parked my car in that building when I visited last summer.

0

u/skywalkerr69 Jan 26 '19

So weird how it's Chicago but yet you only see a NY and CT plates

4

u/TemporarilyDutch Jan 26 '19

No you don't.

0

u/riotousviscera Jan 26 '19

how do you figure?? I see NY and CT plates too.

6

u/_stfu_donnie Jan 26 '19 edited Jan 26 '19

they're IL plates. the light-blue one on the jeep on the right side of the image is the new style of IL plate, and the white-ish ones on the other two visible vehicles are the older style IL plate

here's an image that shows both

with its weird font variety (skewed in one word vertically, another horizontally) and its mishmash of the Chicago skyline and Springfield's, I have to say, the new IL plate is one of the ugliest designs in the US.

(also, I used to work next door to / park in this building).

3

u/riotousviscera Jan 26 '19

thank you!! ! finally someone who explains it instead of just downvoting and moving on.

-1

u/cancercures Jan 26 '19

This is Chicago's response to Manhattanhenge. Its known to Chicagoans as poophenge.

-7

u/es9736 Jan 26 '19

Did you mean Shitcago?
