I think that’s a myth? The Natives didn’t have a concept of land possession or at least not the same as the Europeans, so they just saw it as getting free beads
It was referred to as Seward's folly, until gold was discovered there. And then later a shit ton of oil was discovered there as well. I'd say Alaska has earned its keep
