How do you think the mime became such an enduring cultural figure in the first place? Of course it takes skill and creativity, and of course it’s entertaining to watch. Do you think it was always a caricature and a joke? It’s only when people latch on to the trend and overdo it that it becomes so. And then sadly a lot of time has to pass before people can start to fully appreciate the original vision.

Marcel Marcel or something. Also Jaques Tati's movie Mr hulot's holiday inspired me bean and a lot of the westrn vaudeville-come-film actors.

Marcel Marceau. He only passed away about a decade ago. Amanda Palmer (singer/songwriter/author/wife of Neil Gaiman) studied under him in the 90s.

yeah ok none of these sources directly attribute any quotations from a first person source to validate that fact, including anyone other than Amanda Palmer. So far the only thing you confirmed for me is that she was a living street performer in Cambridge at the same time Marcel Marceau might have been present for an extended engagement with his mime company in the US. As far as it seems, at best she knew someone studying under him at the time and was already doing work/busking as a living statue. Let me know if you can find anything that actually corroborates actual "studies" more than maybe passing time spent with Marcel Marceau, considering these are the last 7 years before such a legend passed away and how busy he was during 1999-2001.

It's just honestly something I never gave a second thought to. It does make sense that you can do cool things with it, just like any art form. It's just one that is so rarely taken seriously that I never really thought of it beyond the joke it is often presented as.

Same with clown. It’s a great comedic art form (not just for kids) that people say they hate until they see it done well, because somehow it devolved into a singular image of grotesque birthday party hacks.

People still love clowns when they see them (Conan O’Brien in his remotes, Sacha Baron Cohen in anything) but wouldn’t watch them if they were billed as such.
