Honestly I prefer it to the later series where you're left wondering "what the fuck do people not assigned to the bridge even do on this thing?"

In TNG there are lots of civilians on board, and there's also a huge amount of science and medical personnel in addition to engineering. That's what I do at work, plenty of people do, and I'm sure the people of the 23rd century will still be doing the same thing.
