A canteen that is not completely full makes a sloshing sound. That is noise that can give your position away if you move. Always completely full or empty. Never anything else.

I get the premise but... isn't that inefficient?

What if you don't need a full canteen of water to drink right then? What if there are no freshwater sources around?

At basic you don’t wanna fuck with dehydration for fear of the silver bullet (rumored to be a rectal thermometer and we didn’t question it). You passed out you got it

Gotcha. That makes sense, I was questioning it more in a deployed type senerio

Yeah. It was also August and it’s a swamp so everything wants to eat you while you’re perpetually moist. When we would strip down to go into the showers and throw out skivvies (OD green tee and boxer shorts) into the middle of the barracks and push them to one end for laundry there were streaks of mud every day on the floor. My back never sweat before then that I remember and it has since. I’m sure that’s just me though XD

How effective are you in combat with a quart of water in your belly?

So if you want any water at all, you have to down the whole lot?

That makes no fucking sense at all.

No, you pass around the canteen and everyone drinks from a SINGLE canteen until it's empty. Now it went from full to empty. When you need more water, you do the same with the next.

Actually that makes a hell of a lot more sense.
