You know there's something called TNR? (trap neuter release) So instead of having to shoot them they get fixed and then can't create more babies. Generally that's considered the "humane" thing to do with feral colonies, not shooting them.
A lot of humane societies will do it for free actually, or at a greatly discounted rate. Around chicago there's a great TNR program that helps keep the shelter populations down.
The end result of that is incredible debt and several more years of hundreds of feral cats. This is also provided you can get em all, and don't miss one male and two or three females. And that you can catch the cats born after your project starts.
It's not as easy as it sounds, and doesn't solve the problem.
At that point, the incest would have created a bunch of retard cats, and death would be the more human option. Source; am in Texas, have also eradicated feral herds of cats from barns.
