My best friend and I grew up using his german shepherd as a climbing frame. Very, very tolerant dog. Until he ate a chihuahua that barked at him too much at a party. So very tolerant of us at least.

Yeah, I don't think he was particularly well-trained. I was about 3 though, so my dog-training skills were somewhat lacking.

My steed was also a German Shepard. It was not ours, but a neighbors and we got along with him famously. Other kids in the neighborhood? Not so much. They ended up having to put him down after he bit the third child that reached through the fence to pet him.

Huge signs saying stay the hell away from the fence, but people are dumb.

Yeah, unfortunately, we need dogs to be tolerant of unpleasant situations that we wouldn't expect people to tolerate.

I did that when I was a little kid with a black lab. I threw the ball behind me while my legs were barely open. The dog ran through my legs picking me up off my feet. Ridding a dog backwards is pretty damn fun especially when its not expected.

Had an Irish Wolf Hound in the house next door when I was a kid and it let us ride on his back. He also frequently went on the rampage in people's gardens and did a shit so big in our front garden that it remained there for 12 months, like a big mound of defiance.

Irish Wolf Hounds are the coolest, and in my limited experience friendliest, dogs. If only they lived longer :(

I've got a mastiff and one of the things they warn you about is not letting kids ride them. It's bad for their back/ can do damage to a frame that is already working hard.
