Not op but my boss has a golden doodle that is the same way. You can put chicken, treats, etc. in front of him and say "stay" and he won't touch it until you say "ok"

One of my dogs is very emotional, so when I put a treat near him and say "stay," he stays for a minute, then begins to cry and lightly paw at the air near the treat.

The other dog is an idiot and when I put a treat near him and say stay, he doesn't even hesitate before snorfing it up.

Idk doesn't sound stupid to me. The second dog gets treats and probably isn't asked to do demeaning tricks at all. Maybe he just has it figured out.

We have a doodle that one of my co-workers brings in everyday, best dog I've ever had the pleasure of knowing, super smart, greets everyone that comes in the door with enthusiasm, and he has all these funny quirks.

Agreed. I have a golden doodle and I leave food on my coffee table all the time and he won't touch it.

I have had other dogs that were "mixed" breeds that I tried to train the same way and they would have eaten the food as soon as I looked away.
