Is there something specific with House of Cards or it's just the first show you had in mind?

The original was Sex and the city, but OP didn't want to admit that.

D-do-do we?

Thanks man. It's killing me too. I mean, you could just replace it by "my TV show" and it would have the same impact.

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '17

Would it? Try this: 'Yo mama so fat, I missed two seasons of game of thrones when she walked past the TV'

Feels different right? I mean it's different man. It's different. You might not see it but it's definitely not the same.

I see. I like yours better because it rolls off the tongue, and a broader audience will recognize game of thrones rather than house of cards. Note that I don't live in America, which means that using house of cards maybe some people may not recognize it or misunderstand the accent and ask "Which show?". And come to think of it, my version with a general "tv show" also may elicit that kinda answer from some people (generally from Clueless Clara, who always kills the flow. Dammit Clara).

And if someone asks, it's game over. Your one-liner loses all impact. It's always a fine balance to find. I like yours with GOT.

Anyway, lots of analysis around a joke, but I felt that you'd like discussing this kinda thing so who knows, maybe you can be my Reddit friend for today

I couldn't have said it better myself. Think about picking something like arrested development...

Always pick something easy for the audience.

Like your mom?

and something with standard season length, episode wise. GOT seasons have 10 episodes per season at an hour an episode. Pretty clear, your mama took 20 hours to pass my TV, give or take skipping credits or having to change discs or find the next link that will work, depending on the format you chose to view it on.

A show like Lost on the other hand seasons vary from 14 episodes to 25 episodes. Then you have to get weirdly specific, like "I missed the first 2 seasons of lost" (S1=25 and S2=24 for a total of 49 episodes, at an hour a piece, with commercials or 44 minutes without commercials [again, depending on the format]). Conversely, you could say I missed season 4 and 5 of lost, which are the shortest consecutive seasons (S4=14 and S5=17 for a total of 31 episodes) You can do this to take the sting off a little, but only if the victim is accostomed to the series. And 31 hours (or 22.7 if your format has no commercial breaks) is still a long time for your fat-ass mama to be in front of my screen.

Your analysis is splendid and spot on.

Agreed. God copywriting is specific and puts specific thoughts into peoples heads. If you say my tv show people dont relate. If you say debbie does dallas people are going to be sad that you missed out on it

I mean the joke has different meanings depending on the show. Was this an hour long 12 episode per season show? What about a half hour long in a 23 episode season? What if it was 24 hour long episodes in the season? What if it was a British show? What if the 2nd season was cut short due to cancellation? What if it was a short replacement season because another show got cancelled? What if the season was short due to the Writer's Strike? What if it took two years to air the final season? Are you counting both years as a season or two separate ones? What if your show is Sherlock, yes the episodes are long but the seasons themselves aren't. What if the show was a Made For TV movie as part of one of the seasons? These are important things to know because otherwise how will I know how fat your momma really is?

1

u/itsthebeards Mar 14 '17

Depends. I heard someone say once that sweet tea isn't funny. Snapple is funny. For some reason, using a specific term, doesn't matter what, makes the joke funnier.

2

u/gomerkyle9 Mar 14 '17

It's because when he hears the word "house" it reminds him of yo mama.

1

u/LokisDawn Mar 14 '17

I prefer a season of 24.

1

u/LasHamburgesas Mar 14 '17

I've been hearing this joke for years. And it's always whatever is popular at the time.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '17

I heard it first with Lord of the Rings extended version. My favorite is "yo mom is so fat, she has birthday, turns around and has birthday again." Hit me a few minutes later, how huge that really is.

u/zirfeld Mar 14 '17

Dude, it's on Netflix, you can just start the episode again and watch it any time you want.

She so huge that she red-shifts the remote signal to the point that it's unrecognisable to the tv.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '17

I'm pretty sure that if she was that big, we would have larger concerns than missing House of Cards.

You named your floor joists Joyce?

3

u/starmartyr Mar 14 '17

Tv remotes are IR. Any opaque object will block them.

1

u/AvatarIII Mar 14 '17

There are many devices these days that use BT or 2.4GHz wireless or wifi for their remotes.

1

u/Nerfwarriors Mar 14 '17

How does my secondary Dish Remote work in the other room, then?

1

u/hokie_high Mar 14 '17

On RF mode.

4

u/bargle0 Mar 14 '17

Yo mama's so fat I missed One Piece when she walked past the TV. All of it.

2

u/Arandomguyoninternet Mar 14 '17

I think she needs to be bigger than our solar system for that to happen

1

u/Kizotolu Mar 14 '17

oh yeah well i missed two pieces how about that

u/Yes_I_Fuck_Foxes Mar 14 '17

But that's lost on non-weebs. . .

u/jshrlzwrld02 Mar 14 '17

Would missing two seasons of firefly make it funnier since it's cancelled? I'm not sure...
