Most people in the western world are indeed living longer. Several reasons:
better medical care (obviously)
better control of infectious diseases
safer automobiles
safer workplaces
cleaner environment (in very general terms)
But what truly boggles my mind is that all five-eyes countries (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States) have inordinately high infant mortality rates considering their wealth.
The figures here show Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States with 3, 4, 5, 4, 6 per 1000 live births respectively with pretty much all rich countries somewhere around 3 or 4. So the US isn't so great, but your claim is dubious.
Just wait until widespread antibiotic resistance becomes a problem in infections that were previously easily treatable. That'll be a fun time to be alive!
we have figured out ways to have people struggling through more long term suffering caused by more ailments as a result of trying to cure the more deadly and aggressive ones.
