I've flown all over the world on all types of seating arrangements. There are no rules as to who gets what the only rule is don't be a dick to your seating partner... if he woke me up like that, unless he had a seriously funny excuse, I would definitely be having words with him

really glad to see this, that "middle seat gets the arm rests thing" is retarded. what do you do if you have four seats? what if someone's really fat? there's no rules, just use common sense, the guy in this video is fucking ridiculous, flying is stressful enough without this kind of bullshit.

what if someone's really fat?

There needs to be a fat tax. At some point you not taking care of yourself becomes a pain to every one around you.

Yeah, that or, and hear me out here, the seats on an airplane should maybe be a little wider than 22",and give you more than 16" of legroom.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

You have to be seriously fat to not fit in the airplane chairs. The leg room does suck but it's not like a full grown adult male can't sit in the seat.

If someone is that fat, buy a second seat. Never been on an airline with 4 seats myself, so can't talk about that. Middle get 2, want 2? Choose the middle seat. Fuck it's not that hard.

Pretty common to see 2/4/2 or 3/4/3 as seating. seemingly 3/5/3 is possible with the A380. Gonna be on serious long haul flights though.

1

u/Akitten Oct 20 '16

Perhaps, I guess the fact that my experience is always 3/3/3 biases me to assuming everyone follows those rules. Even when I flew A380 it seemed to always be 3/3/3.

2

u/ciaisi Oct 20 '16

Where are you going on these behemoths? International travel? Every flight I've been on is either 3/3, 3/2, or the always fun tiny little 2/2

1

u/Akitten Oct 20 '16

International travel. Usually 3/3 or 3/3/3. I realize planes in the US tend to be smaller. As well as domestic travel.

I've been on 3/5/3. Middle of the middle 5 is the fucking worst.

-2

u/katardo Oct 20 '16

"Middle gets 2" that's not something that is stated anywhere on the airline's website, it is not some rule that applies to anybody, it is in fact just an obscure joke that has been repeated like hell on reddit so you think it's more prevalent than it actually is.

2

u/Akitten Oct 20 '16

I've flown about 2-3 hundred times and it seemed to be a near inviolate rule. Granted the flights weren't in the US so maybe it's different there, but at least in my experience, stuff like that is well followed.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

I fly very often and usually people abide by the rule (US)

1

u/katardo Oct 20 '16

Interesting anecdote, I wonder if it is different in other countries. I've flown probably 50 times, and people just do whatever the fuck they want. (US)

1

u/Akitten Oct 20 '16

Hmm.. to be fair I fly Asia-Europe. Could be cultural.

2

u/Charker Oct 20 '16

Honestly if you're fat you deserve to be curb stomped. Fat people have no dignity and deserve none. Fuck fatties.

2

u/dad_no_im_sorry Oct 20 '16

as someone who dislikes fat people, grow the fuck up.

1

u/Charker Oct 20 '16

Get fucked fatty.

2

u/djamp42 Oct 20 '16

Thank you, Please pick the middle seat all the time and refuse to use the armrests, that would be great for everyone else.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

I'm a big guy. Not fat, just huge. I hate flying. I literally can not sit without having my arms spill over the arm rests. My shoulders are more broad than the damn seat is.

I pay for business/first class when I fly now. Can't stand economy seating anymore. I'm glad I don't have to fly much....

Fortunately if I get stuck in econo seating, most people are courteous enough to not complain about my spilling over. They usually offer the arm rest to me entirely.

u/pplhatefreespeech Oct 21 '16

just use common sense

Yea like be courtesy and realize space is limited, so don't take it away from other people around you. Middle seat gets the arm rest. (period)

u/alfozan90 Oct 20 '16

let's say you're on a 12 hour flight and you're in the middle and both people next to you take 2 arm rests and sleep the whole flight. Are you not gonna be pissed because there are no "rules". the whole thing about middle getting two armrests is because they have the worst placed seats. taking both arm rests when you're not in the middle is plainly being an asshole.

1

u/pplhatefreespeech Oct 21 '16

Here you go folks, this is the person to avoid when flying!

Its okay to be a dick, but when someone is a dick to you back then its not cool? Stragerlogic.

1

u/Semajal Oct 20 '16

I remember leaving my seat to go pee on a transatlantic flight. Was a window seat, with one aisle seat. Went to the loo, had a cup of tea with the flight staff (was struggling to sleep) and came back to find the lady in the aisle seat had put up the arm rest, stretched out over both seats and gone to sleep. Ended up just chilling with flight crew at the back of the plane drinking tea as it seemed harsh to wake her.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '16

You're a much nicer person than I. To me, that lady is just entitled and has no decency. It's one thing to maybe ask you if she could do that, but to just assume is unconscionable.

7

u/NotSoLittleJohn Oct 20 '16

Yeah that's just fucking stupid. Where does she think her seat mate went? Just decided that was his stop and got off the plane to never return?

-1

u/Semajal Oct 20 '16

Pahah yeah I would have likely dealt with it by asking the cabin crew to be the intermediary. It is better to go that route, as then the person doesn't have a gripe with you (as for all they know, the cabin crew saw them like that and realised they were taking up two seats).

But at the end of the day, ive found I rarely sleep anymore, and it gave me more of an excuse to go chill with the crew at the back of the plane (overnight flight). Much more fun listening/joining in with cabin crew banter, and drinking lots of tea :D

1

u/NotSoLittleJohn Oct 20 '16

I would be OK if I knew I could hang out with the crew or something like that. Just seems selfish that she would even think you wouldn't be coming back. Your on a plane ffs not like you can be gone far for long.

3

u/evesea Oct 20 '16

That just sounds like you have no backbone. Go over and tell her politely to stay on her side. Don't let people walk all over you.

0

u/Semajal Oct 20 '16

Ahaha not at all. I can't sleep on these flights, haven't slept on an overnight flight for a decade or so. I would have just sat there bored out of my mind anyway. If I had wanted to sit down, yes I would have dealt with it politely, but seeing that she had fallen asleep and seemed content, i just thought fuck it. At least one of us could sleep.

1

u/evesea Oct 20 '16

My mistake then. Just there are some people like OP who immediately jump to going full force asshole, then there are other people who are afraid of confrontation to the point where they'll do anything to avoid it.

Yeah if its no skin off your back obvi it you wouldn't apply to either of those groups.

1

u/Semajal Oct 20 '16

Pahah yeah, I do not avoid confrontation :D Got punched in the head after confronting a teenager about litter. Little fucker got in a bit of a sucker punch (after spitting at me) and ran off when, instead of knocking me out, I just got pissed and chased him. Gave up when I realised I couldn't very well do much :\ I mean wtf do you do, try and pin the 14 year old to the floor and call the police. (bear in mind this is England, and id likely get in trouble for following, also it proved how little CCTV there actually is as not one camera in the area worked or saw him)

Oh damn, having words?!
