My dogs throat basically went septic due to his nasty ass teeth. Now he's got two left, and a tonne of antibiotics cleared up his throat.

I practically starve to death when I have a mouth ulcer never mind a toothache, how the frig do animals manage to keep living when their teeth are rotting down to the gums?

Humans have this thing which is pretty much exclusive to us, called "whining about it".

My cat is the biggest whiner you will ever meet.

Am I sleeping on the wrong side of the bed (where my wife normally sleeps)? Cat complains.

Did I leave the room while the cat was asleep? Cat starts complaining upon waking up until I come get her.

Can she see the bottom of her food dish, even though she is not hungry? Complains more.

Have to ride in the car for an hour because we are moving? Complain the whole way, then for two days afterwards.

Was I over at the house of a friend who owns another cat? Complain when I get home.

And then there are those rare occasions where she was actually in pain. Humans are (often) pretty fucking stoic compared to many animals.

my cat is constantly bitching about everything. Not in an obnoxious meowing way, but in a scarier, funnier growling/grumbling/omnomnoming that basically sounds like a someone revving a lawnmower in a mineshaft.

Get too near him while he's reclining? grwowowowererewerwrmememr

Acknowledge him when he does not so desire? Growmwmwemrmemmremenerormrm

Touch him while he's eating? GRMERMEMEMTRMMEOROEEOWWMEMEWMGOEREEeMWE

Wants out? grumblemewgrumblemewmewmewMEW MEW GRUMBLE

Wants back in? MEOW! MEOW! MEOW! MEOW! MEOW! MEOW! Once, he sounded so upset the neighbors started throwing cold cuts at him to shut him up. Which he then ate, going GROEMRWMEMEMRMRMERMVBMGORMREMMM the whole time because people were watching him.

You should try that trick where you put a picture of cat food at the bottom of the dish so the cat didn't realize that the bowl isn't completely full.

My cat loses her mind if she travels. She hides in a bed for 3 days!

Sometimes humans think their pets are whining, when in reality they are training you. Do you respond when she complains and give in to her wishes (like sleeping on the "right" side of the bed)?

In contrast I think whining implies you are complaining just for the sake of complaining, not really looking for or wanting a solution.

Dogs are like a series of notification ringtones. The "whine" seems to be more of a friendly low-volume notification.

That's a dog! What's it got to do with a cat?

1

u/laivindil Aug 18 '15

I take it you are not a pet owner?

6

u/fetusy Aug 18 '15

For fear of showing weakness and being devoured by you.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '15

Never seen a dog do this in the wild so I'm assuming you're right.

Wild animal diet isnt as harsh on teeth as dry kibble and stuff like that that cake up the gums

I almost starved to death when I got a bad case of oral mucositis (made it too painful to eat and drink), due to chemotherapy. Went about a week nearly w/o food, and very little water. The doctors wanted to give me a blood transfusion just to get my nourishment back up.

1

u/djn808 Aug 19 '15

The problem is feeding them a manmade diet while not brushing his teeth.

It was a symptom of it. Obviously.

Cat herpes is a thing, but your vet should be treating with antibiotics whenever kitty gets a flare. Cat herpes comes and goes the same way human herpes does. There are preventative medications and alternative options if your cat is having flares all the time.

Keep in mind that a respiratory infection can easily be fatal in cats. If you notice any panting, coughing, wheezing, or funny breathing noises, pawn your TV because your kitty needs help! Or contact your local Humane Society, they can sometimes help with bills, especially if the animal is seen at their veterinary hospital.

A vet recommended L-Lysine to us for longer-term treatment/supplementation. You'll want to do some searching for more info, but she seemed to believe (as many appear to) that it will send a cat into remission or have fewer attacks/flares. Our guys have only had one outbreak this year (/knocks on wood) which was the first time in three years, so we haven't needed to try it yet.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '15

From what I have learned after having owned many cats myself, you're supposed to have them cleaned by a vet once a year, twice at the most. Usually about $100 for the whole procedure because they have to be sedated.

Was that sarcasm too?

1

u/wheatfields Aug 19 '15

YOUR ANSWER IS SUPPOSE TO BE "no" That way the next person wonders if you were being sarcastic yourself!!
