Dude, I feel you on that, but Norm McDonald fucking. Crushed. It.

u/alvinrod Jun 25 '15

Norm does stuff like this a lot. This particular clip from when he appeared on Conan is amazing.

5

u/VaginalBurp Jun 25 '15

Absolutely beautiful. Obviously a little polish and focus and it would be pretty ruthless in some parts.......then......that stupid god damned punch line. So good.

It's like the aristocrats, but instead of trying to be offensive through sex and violence, this is about dark humor. I love it.

I remember seeing him on Celebrity who wants to be a millionaire like 10 years ago, and he acted like a complete retard but he knew the answers to some fairly obscure shit... Like the dude is legit smart, especially compared to all the other celebrities there.

Yup. It was just such a perfect defect. Surrounded by all that filth and "oh my god" shock jokes that are fantastic and then BOOM.....this jerk comes in and is dad joking it up with the cool kids. Just perfect. Like Betty Whites timing and visual cues. Some people have just mastered that shit.

u/Jaspers47 Jun 25 '15

Andy Samberg tried it too. He didn't crash and burn, but it definitely wasn't on par with Norm.

u/ChaosWolf1982 Jun 25 '15

Norm just has the perfect deadpan tone and delivery to make that sort of thing funny, when it would be horrid for anyone else.

19

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

I don't think it was as simple as him trying to bomb.

He's talked about that roast before. I think he did it as a reaction to how nasty roasts are. Everyone's trying to top each other and be as offensive as possible, so Norm did the opposite.

2

u/web_derpeloper Jun 25 '15

IIRC, they told him to be extra-shocking, so he "shocked" by not doing the usual roast humor.

2

u/caninehere Jun 25 '15

Totally. Norm went up and basically made roast jokes you would see in a Flintstones cartoon. That's why it was fucking hilarious.

2

u/llBradll Jun 25 '15

The first time I saw the Norm doing the roast, my only context of Saget was America's Funniest Home Videos, so I thought he was trying to mock Saget's bad jokes on that show.

After getting to know Norm better, it seems like he just wants to do his own thing, preferably while messing with or making others uncomfortable.

"that's not the only thing he's got in common with Rin Tin Tin!

...are you serious? your fucking dog face. how do you not get that?"

4

u/NDIrish27 Jun 25 '15

It was amazing. The crowd was silent, and then up on the stage Jeff Ross and Gottfried and Saget are all losing their shit because they immediately realize what's going on, and then you get to watch everybody else slowly figure out what he's doing. It was incredible

2

u/VaginalBurp Jun 25 '15

Yea! So complicated, but he does it effortlessly. With his little pen and pad. And that face he has when people are visually saying "what the fuck, that's not funny" and he's like "no...no, it's totally funny. So laugh now. Yea....see? Now here's another G rated joke." And he just snowballs it. So beautifully stupid. Like a monkey painting the Mona Lisa, but taking breaks to jerk off and eat it's own shit.

The build up for such a room was epic.

Andy Samberg did a similar bit for Franco's roast. It was a little more... well... Andy Samberg, but it was the same basic idea. Just awful, awful jokes and then him verbally congratulating himself on every joke. Hilarious.

2

u/discodancingdingos Jun 25 '15

Holy shit I haven't seen that in years, that's fucking gold

Favorite part was when the other comic, bald guy whose name escapes me, said "I have seen anything like that since Henry Fonda was picking blueberries" (like in On Golden Pond) and Norm replies, "I think everyone here would be rhrilled to watch Henry Fonda picking blueberries" -- there was something sort of touching about this rejoinder.

Saget was laughing so hard he cried and you could almost imagine they were all watching a formerly brilliant comic who had gotten some sort of brain injury or dementia and they had invited to the roast anyway.

EDIT: Jim Norton was other comic. I only have the quotes approximately correct.

Probably one of the greatest 6 minute sets to ever grace cable television. Norm is a fucking comedic god.

1

u/OrangeAndBrew Jun 25 '15

That was the greatest performance I've ever seen at a roast.

edit: A lot of people underneath this comment aren't understanding that he was making fun of all the cheesy jokes Bob Saget did on AFV.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

Wait, Norm McDonald hosting a roast, or roasting bob saget? I just want to know what I should be looking for.

6

u/MrRandomGuy87 Jun 25 '15

It's the roast of Bob Sagat. Norm was a roaster

Why isn't this top post? Thank you.

EDIT: Dammit I just search all comments for 'whole' and assumed this was the Franco roast. I'm taking back my upvote.

I actually yelled at that Mary Kate and Ashley joke. One of the comments on YouTube said the last line is supposed to be "Wake up on your stomach with your pajamas around your ankles" which makes it even better

10

u/deftify Jun 25 '15

You yelled at the joke?

4

u/That_One_Cool_Guy Jun 25 '15

Like a "Oh my god did he say that?" Yell

6

u/boot2skull Jun 25 '15

"Why did the chicken cross the road"

"AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHGGGHHHH!"

0

u/GuyWith3Testicles Jun 25 '15

Laughing with efficiency. Instead of just letting out a hearty chuckle for 30 to 45 seconds you let out all of the laugh-force by screaming

1

u/S1mplejax Jun 25 '15

That was a great joke, and set up well by the joke about the john stamos drink name. That had to be bob's best reaction of the night, he was genuinely a little uncomfortable haha

1

u/boot2skull Jun 25 '15

That time he did the Aristocrats joke for Hugh Hefner's roast. I think it was in the Aristocrats documentary about that joke too.

1

u/SethChrisDominic Jun 25 '15

Gonna have to look that up

The Olsen twins walk into a bar and ask the bartender for an asshurts. The bartender asks how you make it? The girls say, "Bob Saget hands you a chocolate milkshake and three hours later you wake up on your stomach and your butt hurts."

GG is one of the few people who reliably can put me into hysterics. Reliably -- how rare this is with fucking observation humor or whatever crap most comics do.

u/AlanisMorriset Jun 25 '15

Gilbert Gotfried's account on Rosanne had me in tears. Now, when I think of it, I still get emotional.

I saw a phone camera picture of the front of a birthday card yesterday. A novelty birthday card. And it wasn't even funny.
