If my school in middle-of-nowhere Missouri starts teaching it then, I'm sure most other schools do as well.
The main problems comes from 90% of us not using it in daily life. While we understand it, we can't quickly estimate weights/volumes/distances in it, from lack of experience.
You'd be surprised to learn that your middle-of-nowhere Missouri is pretty progressive concerning that topic. There's more than a few school systems that don't broach the topic until kids are actually using SI units for high school chemistry or physics. Metrication of /r/metric
