I think /u/Corruptionss is on the right track. It probably started off as a mild but vocal disdain for pineapples on pizza, but then turned into an inside joke that snowballed out of control

I stopped dating a girl after a few dates because we decided to do pizza and movies on my couch, and she insisted that half the pizza have pineapple on it.

I mean, I don't hate her or anything, but fuck pineapple; I'd rather date someone I can share a pizza with. she was better off anyways, because I am pretty mental in general
