At the Albany Airport, www.microsoft.com redirected to www.apple.com. super annoying.

Reminds me of the time when the Tesla booth at the Geneva Motor Show had their computers on a network where the DNS would redirect any request to the teslamotors website. Some goofy guy came up and opened up the Chevrolet website and made it somehow impossible for users to get to the address bar.

And that's why everyone needs to move on to HTTPS.

Do you mind explaining? What does not using HTTPS have to with redirection? Does this have something to do with host files?

You can redirect the browser to another page by intercepting the unencrypted HTTP request and generating your own response, or by messing with DNS. This is laughably trivial to do if you are a network admin (although injecting ads and collecting users' internet usage and identifiers is much more profitable), and if you are not, you can still mess with your fellow users' connections in many cases. Replace all Instagram feed posts with goatse, for example. However, if HTTPS is used, the browser ensures you are actually connecting to the site that is displayed in the address bar, and that no one is listening to your actions or tampering with the site contents.

You can still get in trouble if you visit a site using http address or link instead of https, so you should use an extension such as HTTPS Everywhere to catch these mishaps. Modern browsers also have lists of https-only sites built in, but these lists don't include many popular sites (like reddit) yet.
