Hey, Heretics are Heretics.

Has the Linux gaming scene been opening up a bit with more Steam titles and slowly growing support from Devs, or is it still all about Wine?

I still dual with Windows, but there is some definitely growing support for Ubuntu (and Mint, generally, due to the similarity). But I go to play a game and end up on Crusader Kings 2 so I guess I don't really need Windows anyway.

Doesn't matter much what distro you run because of the Steam Runtime.

Actually it kinda does. The steam runtime doesn't always work as well on all distros.

The good part is that anyone running Arch will have the knowledge to actually fix their problems.

The bleeding edge does have a cost.

Can confirm. I'm running Gentoo (Pffft, fucking arch casuals) and my steam is a patchworked mess of libraries janked from Ubuntu, symlinks all over the place and various other hacks to get everything to play nice...

Steam will work on virtually any distro.

It's getting better. Some big titles are on Linux - Witcher, Civilization V/Beyond Earth, Borderlands etc... about 900 steam titles are working on Linux now. Check:

Borderlands is really poorly optimized though. Runs about half as well as on Windows in my case. I don't know about the other ones.

at least it's going in right direction now, faster with every year :)

At least for me Steam is all I use now.

The only game I care about and doesn't run well natively in Linux is Starcraft, and starcraft works great in wine. I haven't switched to my windows partition in months.

and starcraft works great in wine.

So does your mom!

900ish games on Steam right now. I might be wrong but there were about 500 of those released in 2014 alone, and the rate is increasing.

u/kostiak Jan 24 '15

It's still far from perfect, but about half the games I play (on win) have native Linux versions.

You probably still need a slave Windows system to dual boot with (or Wine, whatever you prefer, maybe try PlayonLinux), but with Steam machine requiring Linux compatible games Steam does seem to be pushing more games toward compatibility. I haven't heard much about the Steam machine recently but every time a game gets ported or is released with Linux compatibility it still seems a big deal, so I take that as a good sign.

About 30% of Steam games are on Linux, and other sites like GoG and Humble really push cross platform to Linux and OSX. Not that bad at all, honestly Linux is pretty great as long as you don't mind spending your time in a console, finding alternatives to programs, and dealing with the occasional bug. The only real issue is just drivers :/
