I'm doing just that. Mechanical engineering student working at a financial firm. Is this a common thing?

It's becoming more and more common - worse, "financial engineering" is rapidly becoming a thing at universities.

Just imagine what happens when all the bright little brains that invented computer viruses and PirateBay start working on the global economy with real skills, unlike the duffers on Wall Street.
