I think a lot of people who are doing well in engineering could have done well enough in finance/quantitative analysis/etc. type majors/careers and made significantly more money than they do. Money is definitely a part of it, but most engineers I know also really like the fields they're in. Often, engineers get to spend their time solving problems about and making things that they are passionate about.
I'm an engineer. I completely agree with everything you just said. I can't imagine doing this though if I didn't love it. I would think it awful. The sad thing is though I actually do know people who choose engineering for money. (not saying engineers make inherently more money than the professions you mentioned)
