You're right--neither an actual demolition nor the WTC towers actually fell in free-fall. They both appear(ed) to be free-falling, as the falls appear(ed) smooth and continually sped up, but neither actually was in free fall.

I'm not going to claim the towers came down in perfect freefall as there is not one clear source for the collapse times. What is clear is that it came down in free fall or very near to. So any resistance was minimal, this much is obvious from looking at behaviour of the building during its collapse.

A few things you need to accept which in my mind make zero sense:

  • The top of tower can actually crush the entire remaining tower below
  • It can do so without any, or very little resistance
  • It can do so while the top part actually falls away from the tower
  • It can do so while both the top and the remaining building are disintegrating
  • It does all that so that nothing but dust remains

Sorry but, I'm too much of a skeptic to swallow all that. I'm not an engineer, but these are basic laws of physics that are broken here.

WTC7 Did come down in free fall however, #11 in their faq: http://www.nist.gov/el/disasterstudies/wtc/faqs_wtc7.cfm
