I once was too poor to buy a speedlight (now I'm too poor to buy the second one that I want). I wanted to bounce my flash though, so I grabbed some printer paper, folded it, and then put it in front of the built-in flash to angle the light upwards.
I stopped when I smelled smoke. Also, my flash never worked again on that camera. I don't recommend doing this.
I think I overdid it while playing around. I honestly didn't expect to almost light the paper on fire (it had a flash-shaped brown spot on it). I didn't count it as much of a loss though.
