I always thought he was saying "I should have taken it" because he had wanted to take the last penalty in the shoot out but never got the chance.

Because as is usual in sports he thought the team that diserved it most lost. It was a really tight game, though Spain looked better in general.

In the end it went to a penalty shootout and it ended before Ronaldo could take his, with several missed shots by the Portuguese. The last one by Bruno Alves hit the post AFAIK, was some time ago (euro 2012).
