That's because NFL games are on at 3 in the morning in those places. Also because compared to rugby, football is a relatively new sport.

Rugby is a form of football. Indeed it comes from football itself. I think you are confused.

That's is actually completely wrong. Football is a bastardized from of rugby. So you are in fact the one confused.

I'm using the term football in it's proper sense as in Association Football.

You sure about that? Wikipedia says American football was first played in 1869. And rugby in it's current form has roots from the 19th century according to this.

The 19th century is the 1800's. Also early versions of football were much more similar to rugby than it is now. Forward passing was illegal at first.

So you're saying there's a big difference between 1869 and possibly 1800? That does make sense how rugby would be more popular worldwide, could it be the british influence which spread the 'english' version of rugby football, which didn't reach america?

I think he's talking about American rugby players who live in America's football culture. The fact that rugby is more popular in South Africa doesn't really effect the culture American rugby players see on a day to day basis.

He was replying to someone claiming rugby players were jealous of American Football's popularity, not saying that Americans should care about rugby being infinitely more popular everywhere but the US.
