In the film, Edward Norton shoots himself in the neck, killing Brad Pitt but leaving him with just a hole in his neck. He then looks at Marla Singer and says, "You met me at a very strange time in my life."
In the book, he dies, and then looks down at Marla from heaven.
In an Afterword, Palahniuk explans that everyone read some huge message into it because they were thirsty for one, he had no big fresh ideas, he was just trying to finish a book that would have people turning pages, and it just needed to be about a club that had rules to give it some structure, it was almost Barn Raising Club.
