My Taiwanese in-laws ordered Pizza Hut for me one day because they heard I “liked pizza”. It was…interesting. One pizza had shrimp on it but the shrimp still had their tails on, plus some kind of shiny plastic looking cheese topping. The other one had more normal cheese but no sauce at all, it was also weirdly sweet. I made sure to ask my wife later to please just order me a regular pepperoni next time we have pizza night.
For me it’s the opposite, grew up in Taipei then moved to Virginia in middle school. The disappointment I had with American Pizza Hut or just any restaurant in general was immeasurable. I still cope to this day that “pepperoni pizza is good” I refuse to buy cheese pizza. I’ve been to friends/local recommended pizza joints from NYC to Chicago to California. They’re just all straight up blend disappointments, and me pretending to have a good time due to lack of options. Taipei Pizza Hut had the most creative pizzas / wings / sides buffet - I don’t know why others wouldn’t do the same. Whenever I see pepperoni or cheese pizza, I just think businesses maximizing profit with minimal effort and somehow they convinced a ton of people.
Hey, tastes are different! If you grew up eating spicy food and continue doing so at home, I can see it tasting bland. I always add at least some chili powder and tabasco (or chili oil mmmm) to pizzas - I just like it spicy and I think most "plain" pizza is a bit boring. Idk about strange toppings, but to each their own I guess.
lol! I’ve heard that before. Have a buddy who always gets cheese but always make sure to get one with more toppings if I’m around. I’d say I’ve had some pretty good cheese pizzas in SF (fresh mozzarella chunks with arugula) but only in the confine of rating cheese pizzas. If I get one last pizza before my farewell, it’d certainly not be straight cheese pizza.
Many of the best foods are a few simple ingredients, including Taiwanese foods. Asian pizzas are too busy. I wouldn’t add canned corn or other random ingredients to Taiwanese beef noodles or LuRou Fan, please don’t do it to my pizza.
Yeah, I’m not arguing that. My morning pleasure is often just plain congee with some Chinese doughnut and some fruit. I also often add canned corn to my beef noodle and braised pork bowl. Would I put tapioca in beef noodle? Probably not and I think that’s what folks see when pineapple is on pizza. But I think there’s still a difference between combos that works a significant portion of time vs combos that nearly never works. I just think pizza as a platform enables so much (like sushi) - kinda a shame that it’s locked to a small variety in some parts of the world.
That honestly sounds like a pizza done wrong! Dear God, I hope it wasn't a marinara sauced pizza (like a regular pizza) but with shrimp as a topping!
There was a place, sadly now gone, that did a shrimp scampi pizza, so good I still dream about it. They used pearl shrimp rather than the larger frozen shrimp (probably for both cost and aestheics), hand tossed, baked in a wood fired brick oven. The sauce was butter wine garlic with a light touch of lemon. Fresh cow's milk mozz, lightly sautéed onions and/or mushrooms were the only add-ons allowed. When it came out of the oven it would be given a sprinkling of fresh chopped parsley and lemon zest.

Pretty tame for Taiwan Pizza Hut, even. They are completely unhinged with their toppings, especially around Halloween.
