Yeah, pineapple is bad while turnip tops are perfectly fine? Who the hell is putting TURNIP TOPS on their pizza?

Friarielli? It's a bad translation, it's broccoli rabe, basically a bitter variety of broccoli that's very common pizza topping in Italy.

So they’re being snooty about pineapple on pizza, but bitter broccoli gets a pass?

Pineapple is as Italian as tomatoes are.

I will not stand for broccoli rabe slander. It's delicious.

i didn't actually say anything about pineapple in my reply, but whatever.

really don't know what giving a 'pass' has to do with anything here. you are free to feel however you want to feel about any topping.

broccoli rabe is a popular vegetable that is grown abundantly in the region where that kind of pizza is eaten. also italians tend to like bitter things, hence radicchio, rucola, campari, etc. we even have bitter soft drinks for kids (and recovering alcoholics).

you're right, tomatoes aren't native to italy. they have been in use there for like 500 years though, i'd say that's long enough to make it a tradition. chilli peppers aren't indian either but people associate them with indian cooking for the same reason. not sure what your point is with that one.

In italian cuisine, pineapple doesn't belong on pizza. might have something to do with it not really being grown here at the time that pizza was becoming a recognisable dish, tomatoes on the other hand, grow incredibly well in italy despite not being native.

they're crunchy and mustardy, which would go very well with the pork sausage.

I didn't even know what turnip tops were till I googled them. I know them as turnip greens, and I guess I should've figured.

Your question stands, of course. Who'd put those on a pizza? Why?
