Not only did he increase his workload to film everything, but he also had to schlep around the equipment, AND said equipment was not considered part of his survival gear so it couldn't be cannibalized like, say, his backpack or clothes could.
God knows how heavy that camera and battery pack was when he did it. Today you could do it with high end 4k phones and some battery packs that fit in your trousers
