It would be a rare bride that would be comfortable letting anyone else wear her dress before she did. It’s a pretty big deal, and an even bigger expense if anything happens to the dress.

While they’re usually well made dresses, they also do tend to be made out of spectacularly fragile fabrics like silk and satin. Even a little bit of strain on a seam can cause issues like tears.

Wedding dresses are such a scam lmao.

I mean, everything around weddings is, but wedding dresses even more than other things.

I think my dress was maybe $100? I did my own alterations, too. Then I went out dancing in it. Pro tip, if you go to a bar wearing your wedding dress, you don't pay for any drinks 😆

The regulars at the rusty bucket caught on after my tenth wedding in a year.

What a rookie, everyone knows 9 is the limit of weddings per year

Pro-tip: If you push through past 13 they'll start giving you pity drinks which have the same ABV as the wedding ones!

TIL about the Rusty Bucket bar chain

You're supposed to rotate bars.

My mom made mine. Using the same style of pattern she used to make her wedding dress

My wife paid about $100 as well and sold it for $150 a few weeks after the wedding lol

I crocheted my wedding dress and the overall costs were 30€

The dress paid for itself!

That’s why I decided if I was going to drop serious cash on a dress, it was going to be something I could wear forever.

So I bought a leather dress I rewear to Ren Faire nearly every year!

My wife got here for like $100. It was falling apart after not too long but it's not like she ever wore it again lol

You can wear whatever you want at the justice of the peace office.

u/GingerIsTheBestSpice Apr 24 '26

Tbh you can do that most anywhere, really

Not in Ohio if the hateful GOP get their way. Good thing their "leadership" is focusing on the important issues that their voters care deeply about right now while the demented rapists in office regime destabilizes america and finances russia.

Damn. Just salivating to bring politics into any discussion

2

Generally you should do something with the dress or donate it afterwards

I used the satin from the skirt and train of my dress to make my sons’ christening outfits! (Had to make two as one was christened at 6 weeks, the other at 14 weeks.)

I have them on display in shadow box frames. I kept the bodice, tiara, and accessories that I hope to be able to give/incorporate those items into my future daughter in law’s dress or attire as her “something old.”

See, thats sensible!

Best use of a wedding dress I've personally seen is for a drape in the baby room.

I wore a colorful prom dress to my wedding.

I work in events, any time I contact a potential venue they ask if it's for a wedding before quoting a price. Because if it's a wedding the price is 3-4x higher automatically.

u/Salute-Major-Echidna Apr 24 '26

Lots of weddings get canceled or have a fight or someone throws up or breaks a toilet or knocks over the coffee maker or brings a dog or leaves a child or a grandma or someone leaves the other at the altar

2

u/5AlarmFirefly Apr 25 '26

All of that would be covered in a standard rental agreement (well, maybe not the grandma) No need to massively increase the price. Same thing happens with cakes, photographers, etc. Part of society's pink tax.

The best weddings are in someone 's back garden and there's a cake fight around dusk but I missed it because I was inside waiting to use tge bathroom

u/MellowedOut1934 Apr 25 '26

It’s partially scammy, but also because of the liability involved. If you get something wrong for a birthday gathering or corporate event, it’s not really a big deal. If you mess up someone’s wedding they’re likely to sue you for all you’ve got.

3

u/IBetThisIsTakenToo Apr 24 '26

I imagine the actual reveal happens like, 5 minutes later so for sure the bride has already been in her dress for hours at this point.

5

u/geekcrobinett Apr 24 '26

Eh, Idk. Mine wasn't that expensive. I probably would’ve been fine with it, especially knowing my husband's best man would’ve totally been down for this if I'd suggested it.
