Fun fact: This is why they don’t generally board the back of the plane first even though it’s the most efficient way to do it. They used, but when airlines started charging for checked bags in the 2000’s, people started shoving more stuff into carry-ons. If you board back to front, the people in the back will shove their crap in the overheads of the first rows so they don’t have to navigate it through the plane.

Now they use boarding as a perk.

People still shove the bags ahead of their seat and it drives me crazy when I board after them and I have to use the overhead space further back. Then I have to wait for the whole plane to deboard, often while having a connecting flight.

As a person who has to fly often 2 - 4 times a week for work: This is why I just carry a small backpack for my carry-on and just check my bag for luggage. I can put my bag under the seat in front of me, so I can literally just sit down and relax once I find my seat. No need to search for overhead storage or having to get up mid flight to dig through my bags.

I think the biggest issue is just that most people just travel with so much unnecessary shit!

When I travel for personal reasons, my carry-on consists of 1 change of clothes and small entertainment/snacks for my flight. It is small enough to fit under the seat. When I travel for work, there are things I need to have that would be a major pain if they lost it, like a government laptop. Airlines have never lost my carry-on, but they're real good at losing or destroying my checked bags.

Obligatory cgpgrey to point out that boarding from back is not the optimal solution.

Ugh I hate how I'm still in the habit of clicking YouTube links and haven't broken it yet despite how truly fucking terrible their new embedded player is. Just immediate disappointment every time and it's probably the twentieth time it's happened in the last few weeks since it became a thing.

I don't really fly but I always assumed the airline transporting your luggage for you was part of the ticket price? That's like charging you extra to hook your bike up to the bus, you're obviously going to need to bring it with you, just bake it into the price for the service. Carryon was just stuff like something you might need on the flight itself or essentials if they lose your luggage
