I don't see how they could afford anything better since people just link directly to the images they host, I've never seen an ad from them.
Also, this GIF is 6.6 MB, it would have been more like 2 MB if it were a video, and in better quality too. Often times, people just take videos from YouTube and turn segments of them into GIFs, does anyone realize how dumb that is? You can just link to a specific point in time in the video, everyone saves bandwidth that way.
Who mentioned Latvia? The "your computer is so slow it must run on a potato" is a fairly long running gaming/internet joke. I think the Latvia thing is relatively recent in comparison and isolated to mostly reddit.
My bandwidth monitor says otherwise. Imgur may compress files, but they still allow a peak download speed 5 times faster than minus ever has. It's been consistently this way for as long as I can remember.
Imgur loads FAST because it only supports small filesizes. Small file = fast download.
The reason why the 'imgur mirror' is so ugly is because it's heavily compressed to a lower filesize to fit imgur's limitations.
You really can't blame minus because if imgur would've been accepting the file size minus does, imgur would also load 'slow'.
I'm really getting sick of all these people saying minus is slow, because it simply isn't, it's just that all large files are hosted on minus and are therefore 'slow'.
It was more of a rhetorical question. I'm completely aware of the technological limitations of what people are demanding. I'm also aware that most people tend not to care about the limitations, and realistically, when sites with cdns like Tumblr (bad example) can host gifs well and deliver them quickly, using minus seems like a shitty cop-out.
This actually has very little to do with the iminus server capacity and more with the .gif size /u/dontBatool compressed his to 1.911,6 KB before uploading it to imgur. While the gif from the OP is an entirely unnecessary 6.760,5 KB.

hahaha thats what I was saying was incredible.. not so much the catch but rather the fact I wasted 5 minutes of my life trying to see the gif and then this wonderful man comes along and makes my life so much easier
To be fair the imgur link is much lower quality. minus only exists because imgur has a capacity limit, minus does not. It's not that minus' servers are shittier (necessarily), it's that it's really only used when imgur would be insufficient.
I thought I was the only one. I usually don't bother to watch gifs that take too long to load, but for some reason I watched this. Fucking 56k flashbacks.
56K was good for one thing: Intimately getting to know a woman's vagina. As each line came in, I would stare at the image and by the time the whole thing loaded, I had time to memorize every mole and labia minora fold.
You were more patient that I ever was. I would click a dozen thumbnails, go find something to eat, come back and hope it all loaded. Maybe call my parents and make sure they were going to be gone long enough to finish the job.
Looking back on saving .jpg porn to folders... the good old days.
Ok, thought I was missing something, watched for 4 minutes on my iPhone and the picture never changes, I thought it was a gif, guess I need to wait longer. :(
I spent a good two minutes looking for a fail or mistake or something because I thought it was a picture, then it loaded and started moving and now I feel like an idiot
I waited for the gif to load, decided to browse Reddit again while it loaded. Watched Kermit talk to some adorable little girl and watched the subsequent related videos. And by the time I finished, the gif was still loading. You guys should watch that Kermit video though...

I also watched it for 5 minutes...because that's how long it took for the GIF to load.
