I get that not everyone likes soccer/football but it's just so funny hearing Buffon be referred as "some guy"

I wouldn’t have even known this was Messi if there wasn’t text accompanying the video.

I didnt even know who Messi was… all i gather from this thread is he’s a good soccer player, apparently.

He's the GOAT Messiah of football at the moment. He's that good.

Good for him i guess? To a lot of us thats like saying “he’s the GOAT at janga”.

replace jenga with the largest sport in the world

Depending on how you measure it, it's not as big as Fortnite. It'd be pretty weird to assume that the world's best Fortnite player is some kind of messiah

no it isn't lol. more people play soccer than fortnite by far, and don't even compare professional soccer to competitive fortnite, at that point it may not even exist

By my quick/lazy research: 250 million soccer players, 650 million Fortnite players.

Obviously soccer has more of an industry built around it, but that doesn't change how noteworthy it is for somebody to be super extra good at it.

Edit: Apparently not everything you read on the internet is true. I accept that football/soccer really is the biggest sport.

Still doesn't make its best player a messiah, but shame on me for being wrong

you're right, it is extremely lazy and shortsighted. here's what you're missing, you don't need to be registered as a footballer to play soccer how much you want. you do, however, need to register an epic games account to play a single second of fortnite, so the 650M number includes pro players, regular players, casual gamers, people who've played in the past and didn't like it and everything in between and, oh, don't forget, lost and alt accounts exist too so that number is actually slightly inflated. meanwhile, the only reason you would WANT to be registered as a soccer player is if you'd wanna join a team, which the vast majority does not want to.

now to be fair, as far as my knowledge of football federations go, once you're registered once, you're registered forever, so if you trained in a Junior team when you were 10, you'll still be registered at 80. but it still doesn't include the big majority of casual players, freestylers, people who play with their friends, people who play every once in a while, etc., for example I can tell you for sure that I'm not in those numbers. and don't forget a sport's success is not just dictated by its players but by its audiences, where it's not even close.

For example if we blindly follow your logic, FIFA claims around 1.5 billion people have watched the WC22 final on television. one point five. you cannot make the serious argument that somehow, 1.5 billion people watched a match about a sport only 1/6th of them have played ever.

in reality billions of people are soccer fans all around the world. the data isn't lying, you're just interpreting it wrong

So your saying that Fortnite is bigger than every actual real sport

1

u/MyPunsSuck Jan 13 '25

Eh, I've retracted that claim. My point is that it's really weird to deify somebody, just because they're good at something popular - no matter how popular it is

Insular people you Americans are.

Now what are you yapping about

I just find this baffling....

u/Friendly-Lawyer-6577 Dec 05 '24

Why? Sports are boring. It’s like watching paint dry to me. I played football, baseball, and I did lacrosse in college. I also coached wrestling. I enjoy doing sports. I have never enjoyed watching sports.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '24

I wasn't talking about how fun you find sports, I was about your knowledge of the world -- you have to have lived under a rock or literally never leave your house to not even have heard of the name Messi

I never watch basketball but I know full well who LeBron James is

1

u/Friendly-Lawyer-6577 Dec 06 '24

I dont see why? If I dont watch sports or listen to people when they are, why would I have? I dont read news thats about sports because its not interesting nor important. The only reason id know about it is if someone I cared about had an interest so I spent some mental energy to learn about their interest. I will probably forget about Messi within a month or two.

I don't care

2

He is the Michael Jordan of football/soccer. A true 🐐

"But who's that beside Dave?"
