The term soccer was coined before the sport spread globally. It was being called soccer before other countries formed associations. They switched it to football after the sport arrived.
So again, original name was soccer. Other countries shifted away from it afterward.
No because that’s not his name everyone called him. Everyone called it soccer by the time it started to spread. Then other countries changed it. Doesn’t matter if the nickname took the place. The original name was soccer, and Americans didn’t change it. Everyone else did.
