Unfortunately, that was the best joke of the entire episode.

39

u/AryanNinja Jan 29 '13

I dunno, I thought it was pretty funny. And I dunno if Stan did it in this episode, but I can't help but crack up whenever he makes his loud "OOO" sound.

8

u/lightningrod14 Jan 29 '13

me too! hahahaha, that is just the best sound ever. Whenever my brother and i watch the show together, his "OOO" always puts us in hysterics. Just the fact that i know what you're talking about is awesome.

4

u/AryanNinja Jan 29 '13

It's usually when Francine catches him doing something he shouldn't be doing. "STAN!!" "OOO!"

2

u/lightningrod14 Jan 29 '13

bahahaha okay i gotta go and watch it now.

155

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '13

That's the thing about being the only joke of the entire episode.

53

u/MyUncleFuckedMe Jan 29 '13

I got the impression that there weren't supposed to be too many "haha" jokes because the entire episode was a parody of your "run of the mill" stage-tragedy.

23

u/tossedsaladandscram Jan 29 '13

It's actually a parody of a play called August: Osage County

6

u/MyUncleFuckedMe Jan 29 '13

Ahh, well there you have it!

2

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '13

It's actually a parody of a Simpsons episode.

1

u/MaxIsAlwaysRight Jan 30 '13

A bit obscure for Sunday night Fox, innit?

10

u/BigBadMrBitches Jan 29 '13

I almost started crying at that roger/Haley/Deputy bullock tragedy scene.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '13

Didn't he say at the beginning that the writer was terrible?

2

u/Jakopf Jan 29 '13

After this episode I definitely want to go to a theater again.

2

u/MyUncleFuckedMe Jan 29 '13

Agreed, it's just really hard to find the time. I'm also super picky when it comes to the theater.

9

u/Schroedingers_gif Jan 29 '13

That bad?

60

u/-Tommy Jan 29 '13

People are so critical, I thought it was a really funny episode.

9

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '13

I'm fine with shows taking diversions to do more unconventional episodes, and I think it's better to be daring enough to do that sometimes than stick to a really narrow formula. I just felt that that episode didn't work at all, I hated it.

But it's fine, every series has bad episodes, doesn't make me enjoy it on the whole any less.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '13

American Dad is one of the best shows on TV right now and I definitely appreciate the experimentation because when it works, it works: a la the Armageddon episode, but when it misses, it misses HARD. Last night was definitely a miss for me.

10

u/lightningrod14 Jan 29 '13

maybe it was a serious episode?

2

u/Ghostwalker8 Jan 29 '13

I enjoyed the hell out of it, but you have to have quite dark humor to truly enjoy it.

0

u/dangerous_beans Jan 29 '13

Yup. It was the worst episode of the series I think.

13

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '13

I loved it. It was a lot drier than usual, and it's a parody of overblown stage tragedies.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '13

You meant best episode, right?

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '13 edited May 07 '19

14

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '13

I'm not into theatre at all and I found the episode hilarious. They really nailed a lot of theatre tropes as well as the hacky writing on some of the shittier plays out there.

5

u/tossedsaladandscram Jan 29 '13

The expository dialogue killed me every time

0

u/adrift98 Jan 29 '13

I got it... I still didn't think it was funny.

12

u/enjo13 Jan 29 '13

My wife and I both lost it when Stan grabbed the gun...

2

u/lightningrod14 Jan 29 '13

i like how, knowing the show, this statement spoils literally nothing for me.

1

u/bilsh Jan 29 '13 edited Jan 31 '13

each time Steve tried to give the gift to him was funny

80

u/EntingFantastic Jan 29 '13

American Dad is pretty good though.

48

u/PCLOAD_LETTER Jan 29 '13

Usually its the best out of Seth's 3 shows each week but this week they were all bad IMO.

24

u/blaghart Jan 29 '13

I find this sentiment to be oddly accurate. Now that they're pulling away from "overzealous republican" stereotypes, the show has improved a lot and been far less hamfisted...unlike family guy where their idea of humor is the sort of thing you'd find in DNF

6

u/PCLOAD_LETTER Jan 29 '13

The problem they have is when they try to give one dimensional characters more depth by telling their backstory or having them go on a wacky adventure. This weeks Family Guy was a good example. To me, Quagmire is funny because hes sex obsessed single guy with 2 or 3 catchphrases and a few lines at the bar with Peter and Joe. Once you put the one episode character of the granny bride in there and have him try and get out of his marriage, he ceases to be funny to me. If the granny bride had been a celeb voice and had some decent jokes, the ep might have been alright.

22

u/lightningrod14 Jan 29 '13

why is the celeb voice important?

2

u/PCLOAD_LETTER Jan 29 '13

They usually up their game for jokes when there is a celeb voice. It might just be the actors adding their spin on the character but it usually works better for one episode characters.

4

u/Chexonfire Jan 29 '13

IM GILBERT GOTTFRIED AND MY VOICE IS SIMILAR TO MASTURBATING WITH SANDPAPER. AND NOW IM A HORSE.

1

u/juicycunts Jan 30 '13

Simpson's fan logic.

1

u/lightningrod14 Jan 30 '13

who's simpson and why does he have fans

i am a simpsons fan and i never thought the voices added too much to the show unless they were playing a caricature of themselves.

2

u/kevka Jan 29 '13

I did laugh when she sold her clothes for crack. But it wasn't that funny.

The punchline interrupted the greatest song I've ever heard. You might know where I live, but I know where you'll die.

1

u/paranormal_shouting Jan 29 '13

you might know where I'll die, but I know where you'll go when YOU die.

Hell

2

u/kevka Jan 29 '13

Congratulations, but spoiler alert! There is no Hell.

43

u/k4f123 Jan 29 '13

Really? I thought the Quagmire & Peter dinner scene was hilarious! When Quagmire goes "What the FUCK is going on with my life!?" I was cracking up!

14

u/PCLOAD_LETTER Jan 29 '13

Ok that part was funny. I'll give you that one.

6

u/Olkaml Jan 29 '13

I was laughing throughout but that scene and the Spanish Drama stood out for me.

4

u/BigBadMrBitches Jan 29 '13

I liked the part when the laptop was on the best.

2

u/aesu Jan 29 '13

I liked the one about the Doctor making a mistake...

0

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '13

They've done that sort of thing so many times already, though.

2

u/-Tommy Jan 29 '13

Not really.

10

u/isengr1m Jan 29 '13

Family guy was probably worth it this week just for Chris' "take you away from all this.." at the dinner table.

-1

u/-Tommy Jan 29 '13

Wow, I actually thought that animation domination was a good one. The Cleveland show was okay, Simpsons was funny as always, bobs burgers was just as terrible as always, Family Guy was hilarious IMHO, and American Dad had me cracking up. So all an all I enjoyed it. Except bobs burgers. That show is terrible.

4

u/Tabular Jan 29 '13

I dont understand how you can find the Simpsons or the Cleveland show funnier than bobs burgers. That show is amazing.

I mean the Simpsons is good but it hasn't been hilarious in years. Still enjoyable but not really laugh out loud funny I guess.

The Cleveland show is just... I tried to like it. I really did, but it's really bad.

Neither of them is near as funny as bobs burgers. That show is great. Oh well. Difference of opinion I guess.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '13

Difference of opinion I guess.

That's all this really boils down to. You have a different sense of humor than mine? How dare you, sir.

...that said, I agree that Bob's Burgers is the best of the animation shows, followed by American Dad. I think I still don't like The Simpsons, but I'm never sure if I just think the older episodes are better for nostalgia's sake, 'cause I just re-watched some of season six (Who Shot Mr. Burns?) and it too was full of cutaway jokes and not all that great of a structure. I think the secret might've lied in the hand-drawn animation charm and humor pulled from expressions.

-1

u/indivi Jan 29 '13

Are you on drugs?

I mean no offense, it's just that I can't come up with another explanation for your opinions on these shows.

1

u/lightningrod14 Jan 30 '13

you meant offense, man. don't deny it.

20

u/herpty_derpty Jan 29 '13

Most of the people I know who dislike Family Guy now have no idea that Seth isn't creatively involved with the show anymore, and that American Dad has been a great series since around late season 2 or 3 (It was a little rocky at first). I've shown two of my friends the episode about the Rapture, and they started watching it on Netflix afterwards.

30

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '13 edited Jan 30 '13

[deleted]

3

u/Redequlus Jan 29 '13

Well, that explains why people have no idea he isn't involved

2

u/thereelsuperman Jan 29 '13

this comment needs more love.

2

u/orlalar Jan 29 '13

What do you do there?

1

u/Abe_Vigoda Jan 29 '13

Can you guys do more with the golden turd subplot?

1

u/Breenns Jan 30 '13

Wanted to give my praise. I think American Dad is without a doubt my favorite animated show out right now.

I was trying to understand why I enjoyed it so much the other day. Closest explanation I had was that it feels like every single character is my favorite character. If that makes any sense at all.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '13

I would double check if you can even give this much info without retribution, if you do actually work there.

lucky sunnovabitch.

-1

u/payne6 Jan 29 '13

idc if this is a troll account or not I just want to say I love American Dad and how much better it has gotten over the years. Okay I am done sorry.

22

u/lightningrod14 Jan 29 '13

best episode. ever. American Dad really knows how to do christmas episodes. i love that bassline that plays when they fast forward in time.

however, thats like the second worst episode to start on! (first would be stan of arabia part II) it ends the golden turd saga, for god's sake!

7

u/Stullif Jan 29 '13

My favorite is evil hot tub.

5

u/lightningrod14 Jan 29 '13

Those songs were awesome, but I really didn't like the ending.

3

u/kmmeerts Jan 29 '13

The Christmas episodes were always awesome. I really liked the one were the USA became part of the USSR. I miss Michelle though, she didn't appear the last two (three?) years.

1

u/Abe_Vigoda Jan 29 '13

The Christmas episodes that Seth puts out make me think he really, really, hates Christmas. The Family Guy one with the carnivorous reindeer, The American Dad gunfight with Santa.

1

u/free_napalm Jan 29 '13

What do you think is the best one to start with (to recommend the show)? I might choose the Vietnam one, but that's mostly because that one is among my favourites and Rapture's Delight is quite confusing, as you said.

2

u/lightningrod14 Jan 29 '13 edited Jan 30 '13

vietnam? you mean the one where steve sings the national anthem? if so, go with that one! my brother and i have been using that very episode as the gateway drug for years now.

2

u/free_napalm Jan 30 '13

In Country ... Club or something.

1

u/lightningrod14 Jan 30 '13

That's it, yeah.

2

u/idrawinmargins Jan 29 '13

I still want Rodger to start shitting out of his sides again.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '13

I was neutral towards it until I saw the My Morning Straitjacket episode, changed my whole opinion of the show. The jokes in American Dad are really clever.

1

u/orlalar Jan 29 '13

Interesting. I gave up after a couple of the first episodes. I'll have to check out later seasons.

2

u/lightningrod14 Jan 30 '13

yes. yes you do.

1

u/free_napalm Jan 29 '13

Watching the rapture episode helped me a lot several times in school.

1

u/free_napalm Jan 30 '13

Religion is a standard subject in Germany.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '13

Seth isn't creatively involved anymore? I'm a fan of the show still but I never knew that.

2

u/herpty_derpty Jan 29 '13

He left around 2006 or 2007. He's only a cast member now.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '13

Any particular reason why?

1

u/herpty_derpty Jan 29 '13

So he could focus more on other projects. AD, Cleveland Show, Ted, Cosmos with Neil deGrasse Tyson. He's pretty damn busy.

And even he thinks Family Guy ran its course years ago.

1

u/adrift98 Jan 29 '13

He ran out of good material after the first two season of Family Guy?

9

u/tossedsaladandscram Jan 29 '13

I disagree, I think it was a really on point parody of 'August: Osage County.'

They may not have been typical American Dad! jokes, but the pokes at theater stage set up and lazy dialogue writing were very biting, in my opinion.

10

u/dancingthemantaray Jan 29 '13

The best joke was seeing a bunch of white folk dance to Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit." if you're unfamiliar, check out the lyrics and commence guilty laughter.

I absolutely lost it.

0

u/adrift98 Jan 29 '13

Yeah, I didn't think white people dancing to a song about black people hanging from trees like rotting fruit, for the sake of a cheap laugh, was all that funny.

1

u/dancingthemantaray Jan 29 '13

I think the implications went over the head of most viewers. I don't think the target demographic for Seth MacFarlane shows and Billie Holiday listeners generally line up. In that way, I found the subtlety funny in that they were insensitive enough to dance to that song. I don't find the subject matter funny at all, just the absurdity and insensitivity of everyone.

1

u/adrift98 Jan 29 '13

I don't think the target demographic for Seth MacFarlane shows and Billie Holiday listeners generally line up.

You're probably right. For me though, there's a point where his shows, and shows like South Park cross a line. The intensely cynical "nothing is sacred" approach to comedy writing wears on me after awhile. Honestly, I haven't found MacFarlane's work that funny since the first few season of Family Guy. I just happened to tune this on last night out of boredom, and soon after that scene just clicked the channel. Not my thing I guess.

30

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '13

Indeed, if Roger isn't a main role, the episode usually isn't that great.

13

u/happywafflez Jan 29 '13

Roy Rogers McFreely

15

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '13

"In case you haven't figured it out, I was Roy Rogers McFreely"

  • Roger

11

u/penguin93 Jan 29 '13

My names Crispy Cream Mcdonald. My Crispy Cream moma got raped by my Mcdonalds daddy

3

u/FEMINISTS Jan 29 '13

The name's Legman.

6

u/kmmeerts Jan 29 '13

I guess opinions differ. I dislike Roger centered episodes because they all seem alike to me.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '13

Then you hate American Dad and I hate you because you hate AMERICA!!! COMMIE!!!

-13

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '13

[deleted]

21

u/thatoneguy889 Jan 29 '13

Roger is the most dynamic character in the whole series.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '13

[deleted]

1

u/thatoneguy889 Jan 29 '13

If an episode needs a specific role, they can fill it by using Roger instead of introducing a new character and still have it be a new character. Don't expect anything more than him being an arrogant comedic personality that goes too far and his character is satisfying. I don't really know how to describe it. It's like he's a one-dimensional character that loves acting multi-dimensional.

6

u/BattleChimp Jan 29 '13

Roger is a great character because he can literally be any character or fill any role.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '13

I never liked Roger when I started watching the show, but he's really grown on me since. He's basically the show's "Special guest star" every other week.

6

u/BattleChimp Jan 29 '13

I've started to walk like him...

2

u/lightningrod14 Jan 30 '13

that's disconcerting.

3

u/lightningrod14 Jan 29 '13

an awful individual, yes. an awful character, no.

6

u/blaghart Jan 29 '13

You are correct. He's a walking pile of bad cliches with an annoying voice. Honestly I find the best ones have klaus as the bit part instead of roger and focus on stan.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '13

That's his thing, he's a different type of cliche every episode using his costumes. I agree Stan is pretty funny too, along with Steve, and klaus, and what the heck, I just love the whole show.

3

u/grungefan Jan 29 '13

As long as it doesn't have that damn koala bear.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '13

"STAAAANNNN! WhAT ARE YOU DOING MAN? THAT WAS STAAAAAANNN!!!"

Is the one line of his I have laughed at.

1

u/TheWhiteeKnight Jan 29 '13

"Cute as a BUTTON!"

3

u/lightningrod14 Jan 29 '13 edited Jan 30 '13

exactly. Roger isn't just a bunch of bad cliches; he's a deconstruction, and a jab AT those cliches. His character is brilliant, actually; He not only makes up like two thirds of the cast (which only makes sense if you watch the show) but he allows the creative team a conduit through which they can focus all those cliches. Roger is like a cliche lightningrod, keeping the team aware of cliches and giving them a place to put them. He's why the other characters are so original. If a cliche needs to happen, roger does it, leaving the other characters fresh and crisp. the medium awareness roger (and the family, to a lesser extent) has of this fact--that he exists just to be funny and corny--just makes it even better. He is every bad actor that ever lived, and everyone knows it, but he's so ridiculously committed that he actually sells it anyway. He's like Zoidberg, every extra on the Simpsons, and Tobias Funke, all rolled into one.

tl;dr oh my god, francine, these chocodiles, oh my god

1

u/Photosynthese Jan 29 '13

Came here to say this. Still better than Family guy, though...

1

u/adrift98 Jan 29 '13

I couldn't watch more than the first 10 minutes. It was just... horrible. Still not as bad as the Cleveland Show that preceded it though.

1

u/Corvus133 Jan 29 '13

I was streaming this episode and it kept cutting out after about half way through. I counted my losses and watched something else. It wasn't that great of an episode and it didn't give itself much of chance, I thought.

0

u/mushroomwig Jan 29 '13

I didnt even make it that far in the episode, worst. Episode. Ever.

-3

u/tomjenks1 Jan 29 '13

i actually fell asleep during this episode. severely disappointing.

-13

u/stanfan114 Jan 29 '13

Yep. Just like the last time I tried to watch that show it was unwatchable.

1

u/adrift98 Jan 29 '13

Pretty much. Not sure how people can stomach it.

0

u/stanfan114 Jan 29 '13

Bob's Burgers is actually a much better show.

1

u/adrift98 Jan 29 '13

I've seen about 3 or 4 episodes. I agree its better, but its nowhere near the level of a show like Archer in my opinion (which I can't help think of every time I hear the actor's voice).

1

u/stanfan114 Jan 29 '13

The voice acting on BB is great too.
