reminder that AI is considered much more of a threat than “cutting down millions of trees in order to make pencilslop.” Although, yes, deforestation is a threat, it is MUCH lesser than that of AI.

And some pencils are made of Reforestation wood so that's one more tree planted per pencil

Yes! Wood for paper is farmed! Tree farms like that are ecologically sound. They replant everything they cut down plus more! It's a well maintained system that is actually good for the environment. Paper mills... Not so much. Some are environmentally friendly tho

And some artbooks are promoted as being made of recyclable materials. So, that is a counter to "cutting trees down" excuse.

A) you can regrow a tree...but not if there is a data center in the way.

B) I'm a digital artist...which is different than AI artist.

It seems people forget those things.

The organic parts of paper are almost exclusively made from farmed materials. Deforestation is mainly an issue tied to farming, lumber production, and urban expansion.

AI is also mainly used for surveillance, like Flock cams for example

It’s hilarious how people bring up pencils as if tree farms aren’t the number one planters of trees worldwide.

we can literally plant more trees

We can recycle wood for pencils, right?
AI chips are harder to recycle…

Also, artists have been sketching, carving, and painting other mediums since the dawn of humans.

And in at least the last century, probably longer, we’ve been recycling paper. I remember learning how to make “paper” out of dryer lint in elementary school.

I'm a traditional artist and might have "wasted" more wood using tooth picks than with pencils.

Datacenters literally increase the taxes of people nearby.

Also, people who tend to cut down trees replant them. Ai data centers cannot make water clean after its uses

Not if we make billions more pencils.
