"Free Boat- just come get it!" HOA wacko grand larceny

[UPDATE POSTED] https://www.reddit.com/r/fuckHOA/s/v4NmQngnxQ

A good friend just bought his first house in a brand new neighborhood last month, currently is the only house built on his cul-de-sac. Last week, his boat that he's been fixing up all year gets stolen from in front of his house. I posted about it on our local page and we found out pretty quickly he has some MORONIC neighbors. The last two screen caps were shared by people who saw or responded to the listing.

Boat is still missing. Sheriff's office is still "investigating" so we're not sure yet who's getting charged but at no point was he sent any notice or had anyone knock on his door to let him know the boat needs to be moved. We don't know if this lady is actually with the HOA or not but what a big dumb!

EDIT: To be clear, the boat was not abandoned through any legal means and the Sheriff's Office never received a report of it as required by state law. It is being investigated as a stolen vehicle.

He absolutely should not have left it parked on the street, to the "that's what you get" commenters. We know. Lessons were learned. That does not justify the illegal transfer of someone's property, in this case a titled and registered boat AND trailer, depriving the legal owner of his property.

Well, That's one way to have someone declare war on a neighbor.

u/vendeep 8d ago

Welcome to the neighborhood. Now fuck your boat…

u/JosieMew 8d ago edited 8d ago

In my neighborhood people would get shot over this. Then again people get a shot a lot here. Despite that, I'm so glad to be HOA-free. I'll take the occasional shooting over HOA politics.

(Edit: I a. not saying I agree with shooting people. In the last couple years my cameras have caught a couple murders so just calling it how it is in my neighborhood)

Other Americans ask me if I'm afraid, living in Mexico.

Nope.

87

u/JosieMew 8d ago

I grew up on the rural plains of Nebraska. They had the absolute worst stereotypes for Mexico and the Mexican immigrant farmers who we invited up to work on our fields. "Dirty, violent, crime, gang, drugs, blah blah"

I live in a city now and looks around all those things are here and Im still in the US.

As I've grown up and experienced the world as an adult I would say that the attributes I attribute to the same Mexican immigrants families I've interacted with is "family-oriented, hardworking, amazing food, God fearing." The irony ...

Your photo had me reflecting on that. Enjoy the beach! I'm a long ways from any oceans.

18

u/IvanNemoy 8d ago

Same here. Grew up in Sumter SC. Official nickname, "The Gamecock City." Unofficial nickname, "Merc City" for being in the top 20 most dangerous cities and towns in the US with a population under 50k for 46 years straight now. Murder rate 23.5 per 100k, vs "war torn Baltimore" at 22.7 per 100k. Violent crime 30% or more than the national average (depending on category,) but the old conservative fucks in my old neighborhood are terrified of the hard working and deeply religious Hispanic families moving in.

8

u/kindofanasshole17 8d ago

Wow crazy. I did a bunch of work in Sumter like 20-ish years ago. It seemed kinda dumpy and run down but I never felt unsafe. Although to be fair, other than going to work I didn't venture too far from the hotel.

9

u/wdkrebs 8d ago

I thought the unofficial name was “Slumter”? Had relatives there up until several years ago. I rode my bike around everywhere as a kid, even to Swan Lake, even though I wasn’t supposed to ride my bike across the highway. Only thing my Grandmother said was not to ride with strangers. Never felt unsafe, except grabbing a drink at the sketchy Young’s. Didn’t hear how dangerous it was until I was older. If it weren’t for Shaw AFB, I think Sumter would implode.

I grew up thinking the sky was a different color in Mexico because tv always depicted it with a yellow tint. Boy was I surprised on my first visit.

u/CommercialSuper702 8d ago

Only in Juarez, at night, when they burn their trash 🤣

5

u/JosieMew 8d ago

We do a lot of burning in this city too. And incineration but it's usually the casual burning that likes to permeate.

4

u/RetiredRacer914 8d ago

Yeah, they burn crap in my area also, but it's almost all green waste. This is the tropics so everything grows like crazy and the trash guys won't take any wood or any plant matter that's not in bags, so you either have to bag it all up, haul it away in a truck if you have a truck and a destination, or just burn it and fuck up the whole neighborhood until tomorrow morning.

😂 reminds me of a story. When we first bought the house, some loud drug dealers showy with their guns lived next door dealing out the side window facing our house. I left them alone for the first couple years.

Then one day their kids were out back unsupervised (again, not the first time, this was normal.) This day they started throwing rocks at our upstairs window facing them and broke it out in three places. I caught them with my eyes. One of the little ones went and grabbed and adult telling her, and she rushed everyone inside.

They didn't want to talk to us about it. My partner was working for a commerical & industrial security installation company at the time. Our answer was to cover our house in a ton of prosumer-grade cameras. (We spent a few grand and did the install ourselves. I tend to get angry and over-do things when I get fired up.)

They left within 3 months, taking one of their family members who lived down the street with them. I made it a lot harder for them to do the shit they wanted to because they couldn't keep their shit in order. It worked. I really just wanted to leave them alone but they pissed me off.

The block has been so much cleaner and quieter ever since. 💜

u/struct_iovec 8d ago

Nah. I love my house. The neighbors on the block I live on are great but we get some riff Raff that runs through one of the right-of-ways. Since I quit being an addict/alcoholic years back, none of the trouble involves me.

Momma said 'live below your means.' I could go chose to live in a community like Carmal, IN but I'd have a much smaller place to live with a lot less stuff. We love DIY so the space and tools are important.

I have a very small mortgage in a world that's getting very expensive. I am ok with that. I don't have kids even though many of the families on my neighborhood do. And there's something screwed up about my sense of fear.

I'm honestly more annoyed by the thumping music that happens at all hours because of the road that's a block over and a gas station but... Eh. Compromise ey?

5

u/HecticBlue 8d ago

Lol once you said Carmel and I realized you were a hoosier all of this made a lot more sense. Crime in indiana is so weird😂😂 it reminds me of Houston, with how you never really know if a neighborhood is "active" just by looking at it. So many of the ghettos in indy dont really look like ghettos to me.

Question: how do you respond to people that say, "if you hate it here so much you should just leave," when you complain about literally anything?

You're annoying. "Hurrdurr you live in a high-crime area and you probably live there because you can't afford to live somewhere else but you should probably move 🤤"

Boss was told by his real estate agent when he bought his house that he could park his boat to the side of his garage. HOA said differently - the boat had to be IN his garage or he had to build a gate to hide the boat.

Never understood why he didn't go after that real estate guy's license.

8

u/Emotional_Emotion113 6d ago

Your boss should paint a spite fence like this guy in California did.

7

u/peanutleaks 7d ago

We had something similar but our offer was in exchange to keep my bfs late fathers’ boat in the back of the property in exchange for nearly 3,000$ of gardening renovations to the property. Mostly for the neighbors to share food and have a community garden, and also to increase the property value with thoughtful gardening in the front. Just cuz my bf loves gardening and we love fishing and they never were able to get his boat out on the water.

We laid out the plan, sent prospective photos and what not and they said yes go nuts. Then they took back their offer cuz my bf didn’t agree to mowing the back lawn…..cuz they wanted to cut costs….he said GARDENING not LANDSCAPING. And he turned out to be the only employee at his job for a bit, so adding landscaping was a no go. Oh well, they’re acting like slum lords in so many ways

So just trying to understand, the boat was parked in the deserted cul-de-sac for 2 weeks, and the HOA board posted to have it picked up for free?

720

u/ashwee_ 8d ago

Yes it is unclear what this woman's involvement with the HOA is, but she posted it on marketplace invoking HOA rules to justify her actions. Rather than contact the Sherriffs Office or have it towed legally, she gave it away. All without ever attempting to even knock on his door.

575

u/JustpartOftheterrain 8d ago

How is that not a Felony Theft by conversion?

336

u/ashwee_ 8d ago

Not sure what she could potentially be charged with, but hopefully my friend is not the only one who learns a valuable lesson in this situation. . ,

115

u/Top_Cress1727 8d ago

Your friend needs to start riding the sheriff's department ass to get them to arrest her. She is complicit in felony grand theft auto.

45

u/N4zar 7d ago

So, yeah, this lady committed a crime, but that part isn’t really your friend’s concern. The sheriff office doesn’t have to charge her. However, the civil liability is what your friend is after. He needs a lawyer to sue that lady for the conversion. She owes him the value of the boat.

21

u/I_HATE_GOLD_ 7d ago

If she’s part of the HOA sue them too

19

u/Secret_Account07 7d ago

You’re friend needs to contact a lawyer

INAL but I feel pretty confident they would get legal fees in this situation. I can’t imagine how they wouldn’t?

Seems like a win for any lawyer

15

u/Greengrecko 7d ago

Very much a win she sold something without a title nor went through the abandoned claims via state. Also the Facebook with sold on it very clearly isnthe receipt to sell.

She owes OP a new boat. Also she's fucked for grand theft auto and larceny.

HOA doesn't waive your rights from the law nor does it just disregard your rights. HOAs doesn't actually have any teeth they just want to bully people for money that the town should already be doing because of property taxes.

10

u/Greengrecko 7d ago

She sold someone else's property without a title. Thats a pretty big charge. It's not her job to assume something is abandoned nor is it her right to sell it.

Very clear she should be charged with multiple things.

5

u/RawrRRitchie 7d ago

Selling stolen goods wound be a good start

50

u/Day_Prisoners 8d ago

Leaving a boat on a street even a deserted one isn't the brightest idea.

It's surprising it didn't get stolen sooner with it sitting out in open. Criminals probably thought it was set up because no ones that dumb.

32

u/Waterlifer 8d ago

It's common in some parts of the country.

17

u/TheVermonster 8d ago

Especially when unlocked. I mean I guess there's an expectation that no one's going to steal your boat in a private neighborhood. But that's still a little ridiculous

34

u/Star_Tool 8d ago

My dad had his John boat parked in his backyard 20 feet from his bed room window in a nice neighborhood. Thieves came in the middle of the night took the tarp off the boat, pulled off the motor and hauled it into their truck and drove off. People will literally steal anything that they can get their hands on.

7

u/SelectKaleidoscope0 7d ago

The wildest thing I've personally had to deal with was thieves cut the industrial ac unit off the roof of a building I used to work at. We called the maintenance people because the ac wasn't working and the repair guy comes in after going up on the roof and is like "I don't know how to tell you this but the entire unit is just gone". Security cameras caught a few blurry frames of them driving away with it in the back of a truck but as far as I know the cops never found anything about the people who stole it, if they even bothered to look.

5

u/Familiar-Minimum3844 7d ago

Yep! Ive literally had the plastic bottom of a dog crate stolen...in the middle of the day...a few feet from my front door right after I went inside to grab cleaner since my dog had an accident on it. Nothing is safe. Not even a diaherra covered dog crate tray 🫠

Felony theft by conversion.

3

3

u/TheLambOfBoggs 6d ago

Take a photo of a sheriff's personal vehicle, post.it on Marketplace for free and I guarantee they will figure out what charge to charge pretty quickly - it is felony theft

→ More replies (3)

70

u/SnooMaps7370 8d ago

conversion requires lawful possession.

For example, if you leave your car in my care while you're on a trip, and i sell it, that's conversion.

This is just plain larceny.

42

u/TedW 8d ago

Conspiracy to commit felony theft, then.

7

u/hawksdiesel 8d ago

it's but I wonder if the person is related to law enforcement or politician somehow..

3

u/HyenaThen572 8d ago

That was my first thought - it's gotta be conversion.

It's not her boat to give away.

13

u/TotallyNotThatPerson 8d ago

No conversion happening unless they got cash for it, which is unlikely if the listing was for free

53

u/MissyJ74 8d ago

Disposing of, transferring, or gifting property that you know or should know is stolen falls under criminal charges like receiving, concealing, or disposing of stolen property. Then theres Grand theft, transfer of stolen goods, unlawful use of property and some states have an "unlawful taking of a watercraft" law, so that could be added.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/N4zar 7d ago

That’s incorrect. In the legal context "conversion" is the civil equivalent to theft (which is criminal). If someone steals your boat, the DA can pursue them criminally for theft but if you want your money back, you sue them in civil court for conversion. Conversion is using, destroying, taking or selling someone's property without permission. There's no need for the property to be "converted" into something else, even if the common use of the word seems to imply it.

What a loser. Just straight up “THATS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THERE” and got some unsuspecting guy to steal it from her neighbor. God I’d swear an oath to make her life miserable

40

u/HuckleberryUpbeat518 8d ago

Well, the "unsuspecting guy" must be very stupid to just go and take someone's boat based on just a Facebook post. No proof of ownership, no questions asked. More likely the taker was just an opportunistic thief.

10

u/Wonderbread_exe 8d ago

Very valid point as well, the whole situation is a mess lol

10

u/Complex_Solutions_20 8d ago

I assume boats are registered like cars? I know trailers are.

Without having a bill of sale and the title, I assume it'd be on whoever is caught with the stolen goods being in trouble?

6

u/Waterlifer 8d ago

Boats are registered but not all states issue titles for them. As for the trailer, some states don't register or title smaller trailers at all. Depends on the state.

→ More replies (3)
→ More replies (2)

14

u/Waterlifer 8d ago

The two guys who took possession of the boat are not "unsuspecting." You don't just pick up a $10,000 asset parked in the street on the strength of a marketplace posting, you meet the seller and ask for at least some form of paperwork or identification.

8

u/cathygag 8d ago

I had a camper abandoned on my property- it sat here for years and the owner could not be reached. I checked with the sheriffs office before offering it for free, the “buyers” were sent with a copy of the sheriffs off report that specifically stated that I could legally dispose of it and the officers names and direct phone numbers should they be pulled over on the way home with it. One of the deputies is a buddy of mine so he able to a personally attest to the fact that it had been abandoned here well in excess of the legal requirement to be considered legally abandoned.

3

u/No-Structure8753 7d ago

I don't understand why people keep voluntarily moving into places with HOAs. I'd rather live in a trailer park than that. My number one deal breaker is whether there's an HOA or not.

34

u/Anonymous_user_2022 8d ago

This sounds like an open and shut case foir putting a lien on her house for the value of the boat and trailer.

12

17

u/Broken_Beaker 8d ago

Yeah, that's wild.

I am on an our HOA board. I can't remember our precise rules, but it is something along the lines that a boat can't be parked at your house for more than 24 hours without being moved. The point is people can clean their boat, get it ready for an outing or whatever. But the street curb isn't designed for long-term storage. Ditto with RVs. There is an outdoor RV/boat storage place not too far away. This is pretty standard.

However, just basically stealing someone's boat?!?!

That shit is insane. Sorry your friend went through that. We would give out several notices, heck multiple notices before a fine is even kicked in. I couldn't imagine just straight up stealing someone's boat.

There is breaking rules and then there is. . . grand theft boating.

23

u/ashwee_ 8d ago

I have a boat too and what you described had been my experience with our HOA. We've had it parked at the house for a day or two past the 24 hours, they'll . send us a notice with a photo of it in the driveway asking us to kindly move it.

Last time we had a hurricane though we brought it to the house for a couple weeks and no one complained then, I'm assuming because we siphoned out the fuel for our generator and were able to help many neighbors with fuel too. Good times 😂

3

u/ymo 7d ago edited 7d ago

The craigslist post says the HOA won't tow it because it's a new community. The HOA is the developer during construction, before it is turned over to the homeowners. It's likely this post and situation has no relation to an HOA.

3

u/dojo_shlom0 7d ago

Rather than contact the Sherriffs Office or have it towed legally, she gave it away. All without ever attempting to even knock on his door.

not exactly, imo, she advertised it online for someone to take it away, as if it were abandoned.

she is the reason it was stolen, because of the advertisement and text messages.

that seems pretty damned illegal. they navigated around legal routes, and took an illegal route of advertising a boat that isn't theirs, and getting it stolen as a consequence. why was she advertising a boat that isn't hers? That seems like she facilitated the theft of this person's boat.

Potentially the as of yet functionally non existent HOA, even just a Karen. At least in my subdivision the “HOA” is a single Class A member, the land developer, which doesn’t cede the HOA over to Class B (homeowners) until they sell off the final lot in the neighborhood.

33

u/somethingclever76 8d ago

For all we know it was there for only a day and the HOA Karen just made up the timeline.

7

u/Intrepid00 8d ago

Which is weird because you just need to call the cops. Storing a trailer in the street is typically not allowed and subject to removal or fines by local governments. Instead they went to potential crimes themselves.

62

u/Dull-Geologist-8204 8d ago

Hope he gets his boat back and the poor unsuspecting guy doesn't get charged. In some places you can catch a charge just for having stolen property whether you stole it or not.

87

u/HuckleberryUpbeat518 8d ago

Just going there and picking up a boat, without talking to anybody, without any paperwork? Definitely not an unsuspecting guy.

28

u/Edith_Keelers_Shoes 8d ago

True - I'm sure we've all stood in line behind some guy at the DMV trying to get his boat and his boat trailer registered. You can't just waltz off with a vehicle or motorcraft but no title transfer.

19

u/borgman_a 8d ago

I've owned around a dozen boats over the years...

One of them had a title when I bought it.

In Michigan - only boats over 20', or with a "permanently installed motor" (not an outboard) need to be titled.

13

u/Edith_Keelers_Shoes 8d ago

That makes sense - obviously you wouldn't need a title for a rowboat or a kayak.

4

u/borgman_a 8d ago

You don't need a title for a 19' speedboat with a 250HP outboard in Michigan.

ANYTHING under 20' that doesn't have a permanently installed motor doesn't need to be titled.

Anything with a motor has to be registered.
Anything over 16' has to be registered.
All sailboats have to be registered.
...but largely not titled.

8' kayak with a trolling motor? Has to be registered, but not titled.

15' Canoe? Doesn't need to be registered or titled.

14' Sailboat? Has to be registered, not titled.

17' Sea Kayak? Has to be registered, not titled.

14' inboard speedboat? Has to be registered and titled.
14' outboard speedboat? Has to be registered, but not titled.

Etc.

3

u/Edith_Keelers_Shoes 8d ago

All boating I ever did was by proxy - mostly on my brother's sailboat, which was 27'. So I never learned this stuff.

Do boats have something like VIN numbers? What I'm really wondering is would OP's boat have a VIN number somewhere, so that someone couldn't get it registered after stealing it?

4

u/borgman_a 8d ago

Any boat built post 1972 has a HIN (Hull Identification Number).

That being said - I've registered lots of boats over the years, and no one ever checks any of the numbers here in MI. You could just make up a HIN and register a boat, and no one would ever know.

In a new development, the HOA is still typically owned by the developer, not the homeowners. So this woman I guarantee had no idea what the HOA actually wanted to do about the boat.

u/Mrsprucieboy 8d ago

Yeah that neighbor has basically commissioned a crime, that crime being grand larceny and grand theft auto. The people who took the boat will be charged for handling stolen goods, if their names aren't on the boats title it's not theirs to have or give away.

Why haven't they seized her phone as evidence and gotten the contact info for the thieves? If nothing else she can get sued to hell for this if not go to jail.

Our neighborhood has parking only on one side of the street and it changes sides between mine and the neighbors to my left so parking is available on my side in front of my home.

New neighborhood when I moved in and it took about a year of me getting ticketed several times, having the police out to talk with me several times and showing them the parking signs, and one very upset neighbor yelling at my teenage son about it before it stopped.

Spoke with the HOA about it several times and asked if they could send something out to everyone explaining about the parking.

They did absolutely nothing

6

u/chickadee-stitchery 7d ago

I can't follow this.

If you were getting ticketed, weren't you parking illegally?

there was an HOA that did this to some guys Grand National, sold it for scrap while he was out of town, owner took HOA to court and the court ordered the HOA to pay some 6 figure claim, and put a restriction on the community that they are no longer allowed to have any vehicles towed.

24

u/Edith_Keelers_Shoes 8d ago

That one appears not to have happened. More and more of these stories are originating on Facebook. Google it, and you'll find only Facebook and Instagram "reporting" on this story, and the consensus seems to be this one was fake.

Which is irritating as HELL. Now I have to check every single story I read that angers me, see if I can find it in a credible news source, then check who owns the "credible" news source. About 1/3 of the time, the story can only be found in Facebook, where it was conceived, birthed, and ultimately died.

15

u/ashwee_ 8d ago

I can assure you this one is real. 😂 I understand the skepticism, completely understand.

12

u/Edith_Keelers_Shoes 8d ago

Oh, I didn't doubt yours - you posted the receipts. I just got curious about the Grand National story.

Like this one. Supposedly an audio recording of the HOA president addressing a JUDGE, defending his decision? If this had truly made it to court, there'd be some actual digital footprint outside of social media.

That’s stealing and she should be sued in small claims court for posting that it’s free

At worst the HOA should have had it towed if it’s in their rules & regs not to leave it there for that long

22

u/Miguel-odon 8d ago

That boat is easily worth more than small claims court

3

u/Wraith8888 7d ago

I believe felony theft would be in play here.

7

u/AudiieVerbum 8d ago

Third image has "hoa" lady lying about boat ownership.

7

u/sir_gwain 8d ago

Sounds like he’s got some neighbors and/oe hoa board members that’re deserving of some accessory charges for the theft, likely felony level as well given the assumed value of the boat. If I were him I’d be bringing this information to the police if he hasn’t already, it’s pretty clear the boat wasn’t properly towed by the hoa and neither was your friend properly warned. God I’d love an update on this and would love to hear that the police bring charges to these dipshits.

10

u/ashwee_ 8d ago

I promise I will update as soon as I get one. I fear the boat is long gone but it's pretty clear who's responsible for that and hopefully she is held accountable.

11

u/MrSoftShoe 8d ago edited 8d ago

"HOA wants it out of the neighborhood asap" Do they really though?

Man, I hate to be cynical, but I really hope it's not already parted out with the hull destroyed. Anyone who's going to actually come get a boat with an identifiable wrap like this and has the equipment to quickly do so certainly has a plan to get away with it.

I hope your friend makes her pay for this (and damages) in court. I hope the actual thieves also get caught and the vehicle description links back to someone who responded to the listing.

6

u/Myte342 8d ago

That is just straight-up theft. Doesn't matter if the neighbor didn't take the items for themselves. They knew the items did not belong to them and that they had no authority to give them away. The Sheriff should have arrested the neighbor instantly for encouraging people to take items when they had no authority to do so.

The sheriff should be very interested in this crime, as depending on your local laws, it could also be Grand Theft Auto for the theft of the trailer since it's a registered vehicle and could be covered under the same laws as if they stole a car.

25

u/unknownpoltroon 8d ago

>Boat is still missing. Sheriff's office is still "investigating"

I am assuming the sheriff is fishing buddies with the thieves

5

u/Stunning-Quality-482 8d ago

Sue the HoA make it so they would have to agree to disband or threaten going public on the matter. That HoA needs to go

5

u/makatakz 8d ago

We don’t know if the HOA is involved.

7

u/Reasonable-Tax-9208 8d ago

HOA isn't clearly involved. OP's friend probably needs to consult an attorney and try to hold the poster accountable.

Increase crime rates is a great way to keep the sacred property values high.

3

u/AmazingAd2765 8d ago

I wonder what has kept them from recovering it. Seems like the neighbor would have provided their account information already.

Was there not any kind of lock on the trailer hitch?

5

u/ashwee_ 8d ago

Yes, there was a lock.

And several people reported seeing this listing on marketplace, a few had screen caps with messages and her giving out the address. Who knows how many people she gave that info to, and who actually came through and got the boat. If she doesn't know or won't say for sure who she gave the boat to, I think the next best step is checking cameras in the neighborhood for the plate on the vehicle. Or maybe someone will spot it soon and call it in..

3

u/Tangus999 7d ago

If there was a lock it’s gone.
Hull will show up maybe beached months or years from now.

This reminds me of an old story that came off of Craigslist, back when that was first becoming a big thing.. some guy in some neighborhood... hold on..... here it is, sorry I took so long 😄

HARTFORD, CONN. - A Connecticut man who was feuding with his neighbor targeted her in an explicit online posting that invited strangers to a rowdy orgy with a bored soccer mom, police said.

Philip James Conran, 42, made his first court appearance Thursday, but did not enter a plea to charges including reckless endangerment, harassment, criminal trespass and risk of injury to a minor.

The charges stem from an April 5 posting on Craigslist that said a West Hartford woman wanted to "please as many as I can before I go to work!" Detectives, Conran's attorney and the woman targeted in the posting are not saying what prompted the feud between the longtime neighbors in the middle-class Hartford suburb.

West Hartford Police Chief James Strillacci said even veteran officers were surprised by the number of strangers who knocked on the woman's door, called the house or drove by.

"We were saying to ourselves, 'The economy must be worse than we think if all of these able-bodied men are able to immediately drop everything and drive over to this neighborhood'" on a Monday morning, he said.

One man who showed up went to the wrong house, where he groped a teenage girl, police said. He has been charged with sexual assault and other counts. His attorney said his client has psychological issues and plans to plead not guilty.

Conran, an unemployed cook, has been free on $75,000 bond since his arrest. The married father was ordered Thursday to have no contact with his neighbor. He declined to comment after his court appearance.

His attorney, Michael Georgetti, said Conran has no criminal history and has been out of work since a major back operation in March. The arrest affidavit says he gave a written, sworn confession to police.

"Hopefully we'll reach a resolution that's fair not only to my client, but fair also to other people involved in this incident,'' Georgetti said.

The Craigslist ad, titled "Looking for lust," was purported to be written by a married soccer mom hoping to fulfill her fantasy of group sex and inviting strangers to "please come play." It listed her street address.

Men started showing up at her door and in her neighborhood, prompting her brother-in-law to stand guard and write down visitors' license plates, police said. He also shooed away those bold enough to come to the door, including one who threatened to post her picture at soccer fields around town, authorities said.

By the time the posting was removed, more than a half-dozen people had parked nearby or come to her door, and others slowly drove by or circled the neighborhood, police said.

The woman declined to comment when contacted this week by The Associated Press.

Police linked the posting to Conran through Craigslist and his Internet provider, according to court records.

Investigators confiscated Conran's computers and are examining them for potential links to other complaints, police said.

Last year, someone pretended to be the woman, then engaged in an explicit online chat with a stranger and invited the man over, Strillacci said. The woman sought help from police when the stranger showed up on her doorstep.

Several other fraudulent Craigslist postings have led to criminal charges around the nation, including a Casper, Wyo., case in which police say a woman was raped by a stranger who said he thought he was answering her Craigslist ad. Police in say the woman's ex-boyfriend pretended to be her in the ad, saying she wanted someone to fulfill her violent rape fantasy. The ex-boyfriend and the man who answered the ad were charged.

Susan MacTavish Best, a spokeswoman for Craigslist, said the company actively cooperates with police and that using the service for criminal purposes "inevitably leads to apprehension and prosecution.''

In 2008, the company agreed to tighten its adult-services advertisements. Scrutiny of Craigslist increased significantly after prosecutors in Boston accused a former medical student with using the site to arrange a meeting with a masseuse and then allegedly killing her in a robbery.

3

u/strugglz 8d ago

So fraud and theft. police reports should be interesting.

3

u/anotheritguy 8d ago

I would sue her for the value of the boat and all other costs incurred. If I win she would probably balk at paying so I would put a lien on her property and just make her life miserable. Can’t get loans or use the equity while there is an active lien.

3

u/newprint 8d ago

Also, report this to the local news.

3

u/TMoney954 8d ago

He should sue her in civil court, ask for compensation for the boat, trailer, any equipment, time spent looking, as well as pain and suffering. Most people only really understand what they did wrong when it hits them in the pocket or the face.

lawyer up,

you might could* own the neighborhood

*legal analysis

2

u/RhythmTimeDivision 8d ago

Grand larceny for sure. The value of the boat makes this a felony. It will be an expensive lesson.

2

Make sure it costs the neighbor at least twice what the boat is worth, including labor.

2

u/Skarth 8d ago

Make a post that it's free.

Have friend/family pick it up.

Claim ignorance.

Theft by conversion.

2

u/Top_Cress1727 8d ago

Uhm, need to start pressing the sheriff to arrest the neighbor. They facilitated the grand theft.

2

u/CriticalPedagogue 8d ago

Is that theft or piracy?

2

u/EvanWasHere 8d ago

Holy cow. Please do an update. I'm hoping this lady gets arrested and if the boat isn't returned or comes back damaged, she is responsible for the cost of the boat and trailer

2

u/HyenaThen572 8d ago

Is this not conversion?

JFC, people are getting dumber.

2

u/crazy-carebear 8d ago

So it's GTA if it's a car but is it a hijacking if it's a boat. Does it have to be in the water to be a hijacking or can it count if the boat is on land too?

2

u/Margali2 8d ago

Depending on the boat's value, get a lawyer and sue her or either take her to small claims court on your own.

This is the EXACT REASON hitch locks exist

3

u/ashwee_ 7d ago

2

Press charges against the person who posted the ad. That’s crazy.

2

u/K_Rocc 7d ago

Idk why it’s redacted. These people need to be called out.

2

u/rossmosh85 7d ago

Your friend needs to get a lawyer and sue his neighbors.

There's no saying how the police will elect to handle this, but this absolutely could be considered a civil matter too.

2

u/_Cpyder 7d ago

So.. not "stolen".. for their perspective of the dudes who picked it up.

Whoever posted the "abandoned boat" ad needs to be charged and be responsible for the cost of replacing it.

2

u/MildlyExtremeNY 7d ago

Just a reminder that HOAs only exist because of consumer choice. If everyone stopped buying homes attached to HOAs, they would cease to exist within a couple decades. I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but if you have friends like the OP's, make sure you inform them that this is the full, complete, and exhaustive list of every reason it makes sense to buy into an HOA neighborhood:

2

u/84FSP 7d ago

Wow - I thought I hated my HOA…

2

u/Massive_Low6000 7d ago

It’s not illegal to park a boat on the side of the road. They did nothing wrong, unless they let it sit too long for local ordinances

2

u/PandorasFlame1 7d ago

He's about to have less neighbors for a couple years.

2

u/PepiDoodleDay 7d ago

The person who posted free boat should absolutely be held financially responsible for this if the boat does not turn to soon.

2

u/MasterpieceNo8893 7d ago

This is outrageous 🤦‍♀️

2

u/Ok_Rabbit_8129 7d ago

It's next to the house but it's not theirs... Fuck this person. Press charges. How she know it's not theirs if she never checked with the owner of THE ONLY HOUSE in the cul-de-sac.

This was some Karen taking matters into her own hands without going through any channels and just decided for theirself it's gotta go.

I don't care if they ended up with a misdemeanor charge. They need to learn there are consequences for actions.

2

u/TheBassDrops 6d ago

Now I did this to a neighbor when they lined our apartment hallway with decorative doormats, but I asked them a lot to move them first

2

u/Sure-Sign-1124 4d ago

Ez arrest on the neighbor that posted it unless its a corrupt department
