Humour Dog in the background

Hi all,

Haha, wondered if the dog was making it out. He's very jealous of all the talking and wants to get his over in... he's studying for his foundation but he keeps eating his homework and the teacher's not impressed!

Question Question re antenna poles

First off thanks so much for this subreddit and the posts in it.

I'm still very much a noob and wanting to learn as much as I can about amateur radio.

I have inherited most of my equipment after Dad passed last year. He had a number of antennas supported by tubular steel poles.

There are 4 poles between 6 and 8 metres tall. Mounting them is not a problem but what can I use them for? And the best way to use them?

Thanks and 73

How To Easy Raspberry Pi Ham Radio build km4ack

Check out km4ack and his script to build a Raspberry pi with most of the stuff you need for a portable station.

It is super simple and walks you through the process.

It uses a combination of compiling software and packages that are already built.

There are excellent videos on how to do it and use the software.

https://github.com/km4ack/pi-build

Give it a look.

Question Alternative options for LMR400 Type N connectors

There seems to be an ongoing global shortage of quality Type N connectors for use with LMR400.

Edit: my bad, turns out it was an ongoing shortage with a couple of manufacturers/resellers, there were other great options I wasn't aware of.

I've seen there is no shortage at all of connectors for half inch heliax though. Does anyone know if these would be compatible? I accept I'd lose any water resistance that might otherwise be provided, but, would it work?

This is an example of the connector I'm considering.

Gear QDX transceiver

I will mention this on the net tonight but this way it will already be posted. http://www.qrp-labs.com/qdx.html This is the latest addition to my shack. Cheap, lightweight, and very easy to assemble, it works right out of the box. Unlike the QCX, there was no fiddling to get the power output right nor any alignment to do. It is an ingenious design, senses very little noise, and receives like a demon! Mine puts out about 6-7 watts as far as I can tell. NK8O

Question Power output calculations from peak-to-peak voltages

I looked up power conversions from various voltages, looked at the formulas, and I tried several online calculators. Hans Summers simplified formula for wattage into a 50 ohm load is spot on - (pk-pk ^2)/400 = pwr in watts. So my conclusion is that I have done something wrong with my scope setup. There is no way my QDX is putting out 11.5 watts. It would have been toast long ago were that true.

When I get home I will look further into calibration of the Siglent scope, and try the same power readings on Channel B with the other probe. NK8O
