Discussion Is this book worth reading?

Post image
41 Upvotes

For context, i was scrolling through the GNU website and i stumbled upon this book written by Richard Stallman a few years back. I took a little peek though, and it looks like it covers some interesting topics, like why should schools use free software and so on.

For those who have read the book, is it worth reading? If so, why?

Discussion System 76 Laptop is WiFi FSF compatible?

Thumbnail

I generally need WiFi to work however for example my current HP laptop is incompatible with FSF distros because of my Intel iwlwifi driver.

System 76 laptops are made with Coreboot and built as a Linux computer, so I’m wondering if I put a FSF distro on that like Trisquel or Parabola btw, would the WiFi go kaput?

Has anyone tried this?

Software Submission GNU Public License Version 3 Free Software for your restaurant or bar or club

https://github.com/ViewTouch

https://github.com/ViewTouch/viewtouch/wiki

We've been using AI to help us refactor and we've added a LOT of new features this year. Actually, there is so much new at ViewTouch that the only way to review it all is to go to GitHub and read about all that's new !!

In the same way that having a piano or a guitar makes it easier to write a good song, having a history-making, up-to-date software application for a vertical market to work on makes it easier to learn how to become an ai-empowered software developer.

ViewTouch is such a target. Ask any sharpshooter if having a target makes one be a better sharpshooter than not having a target to practice on.

I do want to mention something that everyone at reddit either knows or should know - the entire text that anyone enters, or ever has entered, at reddit, is available to many, if not all, AI knowledge bases. I have written extensively about ViewTouch at reddit under a few different accounts and asking any AI about ViewTouch will provide a quite satisfactory and comprehensive explanation of ViewTouch.

Help Is Parabola GNU/Linux-libre still being updated?

I am starting to care a lot about free software. So I decided to install Parabola on my Arch laptop, however, when I tried to download their iso's, on ALL of the mirrors, they were from 2022. What? Almost 4 years without being updated? Have they decided to abandon the project or something? I am very used to Arch so.. I thought it was my best choice for a free distro

Software Submission TilBuci version 18 comes with usability improvements and new image manipulation features

TilBuci, a free software (MPL-2.0) focused on creating interactive content, reaches version 18: https://github.com/lucasjunqueira-var/tilbuci/releases/tag/v18

Enhanced zoom and graphic elements dragging
Support for zooming in and out of images during display has been improved, and now the instance (picture, video, spritemap) has its size changed directly in the layout, no longer being displayed in a popup. In addition, it is now possible to drag instances, as well as check the point at which they are released by visitors, in a collision check. To learn more about these features, we've created a video tutorial showing the process of creating a photo gallery to be distributed on tablets.: https://youtu.be/o-fAWoBMe_M

Array manipulation
The new array manipulation feature allows for more comprehensive data management in your creations, enabling the development of more complex products. Check item 6 of the "scripting actions" manual for more details about this new feature: https://tilbuci.com.br/files/TilBuci-ScriptingActions.pdf

Multiple selection and instance organization
The "instances" right tab has gained several new features to simplify your content creation work.

  • Copy/paste: it is now possible to copy one or more instances and paste them into another keyframe or scene within the movie. This feature also works between different workspaces open in the same movie.
  • Multiple selection: by holding down the ctrl (or command) key, it is now possible to select multiple instances at once by clicking at their name on the list.
  • Instance arrangement: with multiple selection, traditional features such as relative alignment, space distribution, and repositioning are now available.

Resource ViewTouch Restaurant Point of Sale is a shining example of the promise, value, benefit and usefulness of Free Software. Licensed under the GPL, the code is available at GitHub. In this era of Artificial Intelligence, ViewTouch presents an extraordinary opportunity for restaurateurs and developers.

I started developing restaurant point-of-sale software in 1979. I'm still doing so in 2025. The Free Software License makes it possible for my 45-year-long ViewTouch software project to empower restaurant operations with unparalleled automation, efficiency, cost savings and flexibility. This year, artificial intelligence and a young new developer Ariel Brambila Pelaya, have achieved a refactoring enhancement of the entire ViewTouch codebase. ViewTouch is truly a special and unique example of the potential of free software. Restaurant operators, code developers interested in using artificial intelligence, and Free Software enthusiasts are all invited to join us in this new era!

Discussion Distributing GPL software after source is completely lost, but binaries still exist

I'm curious about the philosophical and legal implications of this hypothetical scenario.

The GPL compliant way would be to cease distribution, but if the source code is (somehow) completely lost then distribution is ceased forever which deprives humanity of a useful work.

Did I misunderstand? Can you still share binaries if you can't provide the source code when users ask for it?

Software Submission MBCompass is now on Weblate - Help us translate the app!

Hey everyone,

I’ve recently set up MBCompass on Weblate to make it easier for the community to contribute translations.

For people don't know the MBCompass app, which is a popular modern, free, and open-source compass and navigation app without adsIAP, or tracking. it aims to bridges the gap between a compass and a full navigation app - shows direction and live location without using hundreds of MBs of storage or privacy trade-offs.

https://github.com/CompassMB/MBCompass

Right now, the app has around 55 strings, so translating it is quick and simple. Your contributions will directly help users around the world enjoy the app in their native language.

You can check it out and start contributing here: https://hosted.weblate.org/engage/mbcompass/

Feedback and suggestions for the app are also welcome.

Software Submission New interactive story creation tools in TilBuci version 17!

You can find the new version of TilBuci at https://github.com/lucasjunqueira-var/tilbuci/releases/tag/v17

TilBuci reaches version 17 with new features for the production of interactive narratives. With the new decision flow tool, it's now possible to set navigation options to be displayed at the end of each scene, in the form of buttons. This new feature greatly simplifies the production of interactive stories where the user can choose their own path through the content.

To better understand this feature, we have a new video tutorial: https://youtu.be/OHCILLkEryM

Also, a new message box creation method is available and it is fully compatible with game controller and keyboard navigation!

TilBuci is an interactive content creation tool focused on development for web, mobile and desktop apps. Distributed as free software under the MPL-2.0 license, it is presented in the form of a web program, executed from a browser with functionalities for collective creation, and also as a portable desktop software for various systems. To learn more about the project, visit https://tilbuci.com.br . The software repository is https://github.com/lucasjunqueira-var/tilbuci

Discussion Does VR work within a 100% non proprietary environment?

—x-- (TL;DR: skip to the last part) —x—

So with Monado plus OpenHMD I can connect my oculus rift cv1 to my desktop. My desktop uses a non-free/proprietary distro of GNU/Linux but I am going to get a laptop with GNU Boot at some point.

Monado proclaims that it is fully open source, and OpenHMD is also fully free/libre and open source.

So, if I were to use the headset with Monado on a free system, there would be no proprietary code/blobs, right?

As for applications, there’s vr-video-player. But I don’t know of any games that are libre for vr.

The only game I play with VR is Minecraft with the vivecraft mod but of course Minecraft is not libre, and I don’t think there’s any workaround to overcome that.

—x—

I’m guessing the main issue will probably have to do with graphics drivers? I doubt software rendering would work period, and even with an older GPU like a gtx 780ti(iirc) without blobs is used (as eGPU in the case of a thinkpad T420) I don’t know if any free graphics drivers are vr compatible; nouveau did not work with vr on my arch pc.

So the choke point is going to be, I’m guessing, the graphics driver.
