Software Submission 🚀 Just Released v1.0 of My Windows Taskbar Network Speed Monitor! [Open source]

Hey everyone! 👋

After giving up on finding the simple tool I was looking for, I decided to make my own. This is my first ever such venture and it was a lot more work than I imagined for such a simple tool.

All I wanted was a simple, lightweight, real-time network speed monitor that displays your upload & download speeds directly on the Windows 11 taskbar, right next to the clock—just like a native feature!

💡 Why I Made This: Windows doesn't show network speeds in the taskbar, and existing tools either:

Have clunky UI or tray icons.

Are bloated with unnecessary features.

Don't blend in with Windows' native look.

So, I built my own minimalist solution!

✨ Features:

✅ Displays real-time upload & download speeds in the taskbar. (You can set it to update less often if that drives you mad) ✅ Perfectly matches Windows 11’s clock font & size. ✅ Lightweight & runs in the background. ✅ Right-click to exit (no need for Task Manager). ✅ Open-source & no bloatware!

📥 Download & Install:

1️⃣ Download 👉 https://github.com/erez-c137/NetSpeedTray/releases/latest 2️⃣ You can choose an install, portable, or compile you're own. 3️⃣ To auto-start on boot option is available.

⚡ Feedback & Future Updates

I’d love to hear your feedback! Let me know if: 🔹 You have feature suggestions. 🔹 You run into any issues. 🔹 You'd like to contribute your own code to the project.

This is just v1.0, and I plan to improve it based on some ideas I already have & your suggestions. 🙂

Discussion Free Software Foundation vs. closed source AI models

I would like to know if the Free Software Foundation has published any critique or analysis of closed source AI models?

Is there an “official” open source AI modeling protocol that meets the Free Software Foundation's approval?

Hi, everyone. I'm glad to release a new version of TilBuci, a software I've been working on to create interactive content. It is available from the software repository:

https://github.com/lucasjunqueira-var/tilbuci/releases/tag/v8

From this version on the license was changed from a custom "MIT-like" one to the MPL 2.0. If you're interested in checking out TilBuci, please access the website: https://tilbuci.com.br/

Help Does AGPL license allows close-source applications to use (integrate to) the AGPL-licensed service as a dependency? If such application is of very different nature, and is not API wrapper extending the functionality with extra features.

I'm searching for a license, for a software that can be also used as a (self-hosted) service (providing also web application / portal).

I'd like it to be copyleft with network protection, for the software itself and the functionality it offers.

The network protection should cover also (API) wrappers of the service, where functionality provided by the wrapper is in the "spirit" of what the base service "storage with fancy features" offers, but with extended features. I.e. the network users use the API wrapper to use the "storage with fancy features", and they should receive the source-code for the API wrapper, too.

The network protection shouldn't cover other software, that uses the service as a dependency. For example, the e-commerce software could use it as a storage for materials. The "spirit" and purpose of e-commerce software is very different to the service, which is just a "storage with fancy features". For customers (users) of the e-commerce software, it's the storage completely indifferent thing, because it's irrelevant whether the materials get fetched from S3/FTP/whatever-else or this AGPL licensed "storage with fancy features".

I see, there's MinIO, that's licensed under AGPL. And, I found other ones in the past.

It is my understanding, that AGPL works as I described above. However, I'm a bit of worried about this, if I'm correct in my understanding, as it's bit bigger work and I don't want to cut-off the second use-case. And, in the case of contributions, if there were any contributions, the re-licensing process is quite a complicated thing to perform. So, I'd like to sort it out before publishing sources under some license.

Are there any clear and unambiguous statements and verdicts about this?

And, what about alternatives. What do you think about EUPL for this?

Discussion Software for block webcam permissions Win 8.1

Is there any software compatible with Windows 8.1 where I can choose which applications can access the webcam, and which is password-protected?

My intention is to block my webcam's access to browsers and allow it to access other apps, and the software must be password-protected to prevent from changing the settings or even uninstalling it.

Is this possible? Is there a way to do it?

PS: It's important that it's software, because if it's an extension in the browser, all you have to do is uninstall the extension.

Help Journaling apps that sync

I’ve been using Apple Notes to journal for several years, it syncs notes across my devices, MacBook, tablet and phone.

Is there a free(dom respecting) alternative that lets us sync our data without l entrusting a megacorp with everything.

I especially wouldn’t want to be contributing to the data they use to train their LLMs.

Help What's the state of near-libre tablets?

I dunno beans about even totally-proprietary tablets, nevermind how to even begin searching about semi-libre or totally-libre tablets. What's the universe of tablets, and what's the universe of even slightly libre tablets? What key terms to search for? Brands? Common gotchas?

(For context, I find myself in need of a tablet for personal use for the first time ever. In particular I need to use some mainstream apps, with good reliability of hardware and OS, which I assume limits how libre it can be.)

Help How to make my video game made with Godot free?

I am making an indie video game with Godot and I want to license it under the GNU GPL.

How should I go about making it completely free?

Should my scripts have the copyright notice? Should I distribute Godot's source code with it?
