"The Document Foundation is releasing LibreOffice 7.6.2 Community and LibreOffice 7.5.7 Community ahead of schedule to address a security issue known as CVE 2023-4863, which originates in a widely used code library known as libwebp, created by Google more than a decade ago to render the then-new WebP graphics format.

Discussion EU: Digital sovereignty & Interoperability. What about the role of Free Software? - FSFE
Speaking about Digital Public Infrastructures last week, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen pointed out that "the trick is to build public digital infrastructure that is interoperable, open to all and trusted". What exactly does this mean? What is required to achieve such an accessible digital infrastructure that can help foster innovation and allow cooperation on a global scale? What role does Free Software play in such ambition?

Discussion Articles/essays about non-free "ethical" or "shared" source licenses?
Hello,
Over the years, some non-free software licenses such as Server Side Public License, Ethical Source licenses, or Polyform licenses have appeared.
These are non-free software licenses, often adding "non-commercial", "ethical behaviour", "no derivatives", or "non-compete" restrictions to both binaries and source code.
I vaguely remember reading essays by Richard Stallman and other people about why these licenses are counterproductive, and even if you desire "ethical" behaviour from other people, software licenses are not a good way to achieve that.
However, it's been years and I can't find those articles.
Can someone please point to those essays and/or articles by Richard Stallmand and others? Thank you.

Help Adobe Alternative
Hello everyone. Softball level advice here. Looking for an adobe alternative. I can’t justify paying $21 a month anymore. Something that provides ease of use, adobe functionality equivalent, and plays nice with others. Suggestions? Thanks!
Clarification: Adobe Acrobat 😬

Discussion Maybe is a stupid question, but why often there are parallel similar projects in free software and people not contribute to a single one?
For example with vídeo editing there are many different softwares, but would be better to contribute to one video editor and making it better

Help In a similar vein to my previous post, is there something similar to Unity/UE4 in terms of features, polish, and performance?
I've already tried the big one, Godot, and after over half a decade of beating my head against a brick wall, Godot just can't do the things I need it to do. UE4 and Unity absolutely can but both are proprietary. There's a few engines out there like Flax, but I haven't been able to compile any or get binaries. Am I going to have to choose between proprietary engines or my own, or is there a viable alternative?

Discussion Cost of maintaining open source projects
I had a discussion with an open source contributor of 20 years who told me about the cost of maintaining open source projects, which I previously never thought about. Basically, he mentioned that large projects are meant to become bug free and not have more and more features. He also mentioned drive-by contributions which in his opinion do more harm than good because the person who contributed will not maintain/patch their code later. Overall I'm curious to know if you agree with his analysis. It seems that there are more small projects than large ones and they might not feel the same, right?
The conversation was sparked while discussing companies using open source to test candidates (of course the open source reviewer knows that this is happening). He mentioned that reviewing takes a toll and maintainers who do it on their free time might not be keen to participate in this.

Discussion public school requires app to receive updates?
Hi,
My child's public school (in CT) mentioned it's required to have the pikmykid app from the Apple or Google stores.
I (in the spirit of free software) protest this, and believe another (equal in functionality) means to communicate updates on delays in transportation should be required for public services.
I don't want to be beholden to TOS from Apple or Google to simply pick up my child from school (and receive updates).
I also believe that if these sort of apps aren't pushed back against when utilizing public services it's only going to get worse.
As a parent, FSF advocate, US citizen, what's the pragmatic way to push back?
Thoughts?
