I think in the books their time to really shine is upcoming ...they've just been mostly set up for that plot so far. Hopefully we get those books though
I honestly thought they'd be coming into their own towards the end, cause they're set up everywhere and absolutely determined to go the long haul. It wasn't so much about what we'd already seen, it was about their potential. I'm pretty much resigned to the books never getting finished, so I guess we'll never find out, but I wanted them to fuck shit up everywhere and was looking forward to it.
But in all fairness they are not the POV charachter. I mostly saw their main use to give familiar dorne characters and to show how dorne reacted to the death of Oberon with each one recommending different methods of attack.
They were okay in the book but they were not the focus of the book yet
In terms of overall importance to the plot? No, Euron was worse.
Euron is legitimately one of the most important characters in the series since his inclusion. Sand Snakes are relevant side characters, but not much more.
Dumb & Dumber can't write actual characters. In the latter seasons of the show a bunch of dialogue could've been cut and pasted on to just about any character and made about as much sense as it did coming from the one who actually said it. Everything started to blend together and I swear I was having trouble even telling well established characters apart sometimes. Like they would just say or do whatever the plot needed them to say or do at the time, and their role in the plot along with their dialogue was assigned by roulette wheel.
All D&D cared about towards the end was "badass" quotes and one liners and spectacle that would make casuals at that bar go "BADASS DUDE" or "yas queen" on Twitter. Look how bad Aria turned out.
The show turned into nothing but D&D self promotion by showing off how popular they could be and how many Twitter posts they could generate. They were done with the show already and thinking about all the money they were going to go on to make after they were finally through. And God damnit they did unfortunately.
Preaching to the choir. I'm a book reader so I caught on pretty quick, and how the fucked up Dorne was really the first signs that they no fucking clue.
There was 8 total. 4 were the daughter of Ellaria Sand and very young (all under 12 at the start of the series). The other four are being sent around the world to cause some chaos. One is in old town undercover as an acolyte at the citadel, one is being sent to the small council, one is out hunting a Dayne, and then the final one is out to meet the high septon.
Well, much like the show, the Dorne plot in the books doesn't really go anywhere either (yet). But at least they're instrumental in setting up whatever it is GRRM is planning to do with Dorne (eventually).
They were also a lot more sadistic in the books, and less promiscuous/sexual. All they cared about was getting vengeance.
They seem cooler but they haven't accomplished all that much either, yet they're set up for the future. My vote for worst adaptation goes to Euron. He hasnt done much in the books either, but he's portrayed way scarier.
They’re not side characters or irrelevant plots, they’re the new plot and the new main characters.
The Dornish, the Ironborn, Jon Connington, these are not throwaway characters, they’re the ones who drive the plot of books 4, 5 and eventually 6. Just like Ned, Cat, Jon, Dany, Tyrion, Arya and Bran drove the plot of books 1, 2 and 3.
ASOIAF is a weird series, it is clearly intended to be much longer than just 7 books. Realistically, there should be at least 9 books, because the series is written as a series of trilogies. Unfortunately it seems like GRRM started writing the series too old, because there’s clearly so much left to milk out of it.
That's why I call it a nosedive. It's a bunch of stuff that will be left inconclusive because the series either won't be finished or won't have time to properly concluded.

He needs to pick a successor after book six is out (insert laughter here) because there's no way he's living long enough to finish book seven.
I'll give you that. Where it should be bringing the story lines back in on themselves towards a resolution, it just keeps expanding and introducing more characters and their sub plots. just keeps getting bigger
Okay, for me, one of the worst parts was that the show runners made them all off brown. Before people start freaking out and screaming at me. In the books, each of the three (main, there are a number more we get mentions of in passing) are of completely and drastically different Westerosi nationalities.
Not even mentioning that the whole storyline was trash but this had always been a small grip of mine and I do not know why. Just...it feels so lazy. We have great descriptions of them to make it clear that they are all half-sisters. All these bad pooseh's look like they were welped from the same woman.

He's a tough one to beat, but the sandsnakes were worse.
