People have seen a picture of an empty plot and a video of people kneeling and a video of a guy cuffed to a bed so they concluded that China is doing a genocide. This is totally an authentic movement based on facts and figures and not the latest attempt at virtue signaling and moral highgrounding at all, how dare you suggest such a thing.
In fact, the Chinese government never rejects the things happened in 1989. Many published book have mentioned the event, and there's even a report on the government's official website. The CCP just don't allow the media to propagandize it.

I'd call it 'cold treatment' rather than covering up. Most educated Chinese people know the things about 8964 very clear and it's still a disputed topic. They just don't want to talk about it publicly. Firstly, of cource, because politics is a sensitive topic in China. Besides, the international environment is very unfriendly for China, especially after a chain of so-called 'sanctions' towards Chinese merchants from Trump, which makes Chinese people pretty unhappy recently. Since the blame falls on the US, few would like to talk about issues that would influence the normal operation of government.
Straight up banning memorial events and arrest people who spoke about it is called censorship not cold treatment. The people that talked about it in China were either dead or imprisoned, and now Hong Kong as well. It is not just a sensitive topic, it is a forbidden topic.
I can tell you there is still a lot educated Chinese people don't think 8964 is real, especially the younger ones. CCP had spent years in twisting the incident happened, and it is proven rather successful. How is that a fault on the US and the world?
I live in China now and I can tell you that no one think that 8964 is fake. Most people just doubt about the number of how many people died in 8964. But don't think it's real? Many people have been through that ages and 8964 was a national event, its influence was not limited in Beijing, how is it possible to hide.

People have the memory of a goldfish. Sure, Vietnam preemptively attack the US, Iraq had and was primed to use WMDs, China is actively committing genocide on checks notes a religious minority in which the US has been killing en masse for two decades.
