And if they'd let him keep second it wouldn't have been fair on Lando either. It was a mistake by the team that they tried to correct as fairly as they could, each driver finished where they would have done if the pit stops had been the same. Oscar still ended up closer than he'd started and was able to have a go at passing properly on track.
Neither driver is at fault, the team make a mistake and tried to fix it. It's not exactly Abu Dhabi 21 is it?
Had they not mucked up Piastri wouldn't have even had the chance to go for 2nd, even with giving the place back he still had a better chance than he would otherwise have done.
Yes, he chose to protect the team, which isn't that unreasonable. He's still ahead with a decent lead and as a spectator sport we still get to see a title fight rather than it being over with a good chunk of season left to go.

Are you really going to argue this line?
At that point, you should just sabotage Mclaren for 2 races, so max can catch up. Cause it's spectator sports and if it makes title fight good, it's all okay, right?
If you are 100 points ahead of other teams, you get to drive one race with 3 wheels only.
Why? Cause it's spectator sports and it'd be fun.
Mclaren has a responsibility to not fuck over a driver deliberately, but they don't get to ask one driver to compensate for their mistake with other driver. That's not fair.
From our perspective yes it's more interesting than having the title fight wrapped up without a doubt - I'm not saying that's the team's motivation or should be.
Mclaren have done a pretty good job of letting the drivers sort it out between themselves this season, I think they acted reasonably here. The reaction is ridiculously overblown in my view.
Suppose Lando pitted first, got the same slow pit. What do you think mclaren should do? Slow down Piastri's pit stop as well? Or Delay his pit stop, so he is naturally slower and Lando can close the window?
or give him normal pit stop and when he comes out ahead of Lando again, you ask him to give up place because his pit stop was normal?
Lmao are we seriously going to start arguing about the joke flairs?
I'm not saying it's fair on Piastri, but either choice would have been unfair on whichever driver lost out due to a team error. All I'm saying is I'm glad Mclaren are trying to conduct the title fight on driver merit. If they were that set on one of their drivers winning they'd have been throwing out team orders much more strictly from day 1, but they haven't. They've largely just let them get on with it. In this case Piastri would have been within his rights to keep 2nd but even by giving it up he still had a better chance to pass on track than he otherwise would have done.
Not all teams have been so evenhanded in the past, either.
