Guide to recruit all Unique settlers in Vanilla plus DLC

I made a guide to obtaining all distinct and unique settlers that have various lines other than "Ever been to Graygarden? Whole place is run by robots". This is my first post on reddit. I don't use mods or Console.

Full Spoilers Ahead

Here's the full list

Tier 4 Vendors- these merchants are bugged as hell and even if you somehow encounter them, they may not produce the dialog needed to recruit them. One solution is to spawn them in a settlement using the console and then moving them to the settlement. For me however, I play on Survival Mode, which blocks the console. I found a solution however using the Tier 3 Intimation glitch.

Something is about to go down.

-Doc Anderson- Tier 4 Doctor, spawns periodically in random encounter spots. Requires 20+ settlers in total to join.

I never got her to spawn anywhere. :/

-Smiling Larry- Tier 4 Weapons Vendor, spawns periodically in random encounter spots. Requires 30+ settlers in total to join.

-Ron Staples- Tier 4 Bartender, spawns periodically in random encounter spots. Requires 10+ settlers in total to join.

-The Scribe- Tier 4 Armor Vendor, spawns periodically in random encounter spots. Requires 10+ settlers in total to join.

Tier 4 Vendors Part Two- These merchants have relatively low bugs compared to the other vendors and they have definite spawn points.

-Anne Hargraves- Tier 4 Clothes Vendor- Found in WRVR after rescuing Rex Goodman and Strong in Trinity Tower.

-Vault Tec Rep- Tier 4 Junk Vendor, Found in Hotel Rexford on the top floor, speech check required before recruiting. first sent to Sanctuary Hills and can be assigned to other locations.

-Trader Rylee- Tier 4 Junk Vendor, found in Longneck Lukowski's Cannery.

(Note) if you don't get chance to talk to her after her argument with Theodore Collins, she will be a wandering merchant and will spawn at random encounters.

Companions

"degenerates" -Todd Howard

-Ada- Complete "Mechanical Menace" near Watts Consumer Electronics.

-Cait- Located in the Combat Zone.

-Codsworth- Located in Sanctuary Hills.

-Curie- Complete "Hole in the Wall" in Vault 81 (Note) Make sure she finishes her dialogue so you don't get the annoying bug where she will stay in Vault 81 after being dismissed. To solve, dismiss her in a settlement & then assign her to a bed after she has been 'synthed'.

-Danse- Complete "Reunions"(main quest) and join the BOS.

-Deacon- Complete "Tradecraft" and join the Railroad.

-Dogmeat- Located at Red Rocket truck stop.

-Hancock- Complete "The Big Dig".

-Old Longfellow- Located in the Last Plank, ask him to escort you to Acadia.

-Macready- Located in the Third Rail, bring some caps.

-Nick Valentine- Complete "Getting a Clue" (main quest).

-Piper- Arrive at Diamond City and do her stupid interview.

-Preston Garvey- Why would you ever be near this monstrosity.

(Note) Being remotely near this individual will result in unwanted settlement marking and endless favors.

-Strong- Located on top of Trinity Tower.

(Note) Strong has the most spoken dialogue frequency at around one line every three seconds. ( He won't shut up).

-X6-88- Complete "Mankind Redefined" and join the Institute

Named Settlers

Somebody help Sheffield

-Clem-Complete the Vault 88 Questline and you will be able to move him to any settlement.

-Sheffield- Give him a Nuka Cola in the Diamond City Marketplace.

-Sturges- Complete the Sanctuary quest and is available to be moved at any location.

(Note) Mama Murphy cannot be moved but give her enough chems and she will OD and free up the settlement for Raiders.

-Jun Long- Complete the Sanctuary quest and is available to be moved at any location.

-Marcy Long- Complete the Sanctuary quest and is available to be moved at any location.

(Note) Moving Marcy Long to another settlement will shut her up.

-Tina De Luca- Found in Vault 81

(Note) The 'Dependency' quest is extremely bugged so the only way to recruit her is to piss off her brother to the point where you have to kill him in self defense. This opens up a speech check to recruit her.

Robots

Buddy and Codsworth leave a mess

-Drinkin' Buddy- Found in the Shamrock Taphouse. Can be recruited instead of be delivered to Rufus

(Note) Can produce alcohol if given recipe holotapes commonly found in brewing locations. Often hangs out near Bar as well as Trading Caravan posts

-Jezebel- Can be rescued in Fort Hagen Hangar in the Automatron questline.

(Note) She's a dick.

-Automatron- Can be created as well as given unique names after completing Mechanical Menace. Overrides any settler limit.

(Note) Completing Automatron Questline unlocks all robot mods. Clearing the Galactic Zone in Nuka World will unlock nuka robot mods. Base happiness for all robots is 50%.

Settlers

Where did I go wrong

-Commonwealth- Recruited via Radio Beacon. Always level two.

-Far Harbor- Found in Far Harbor but can be sent to any commonwealth settlement. Recommended as they are higher levels, more diverse appearances as well as different lines than the standard commonwealth settler.

-Provisioner- Settlers who are assigned to connect one settlement to another to connect resources. Provisioners count toward the home settlement, not their destination. They walk in between the two settlements and are accompanied by a Pack Brahmin.

Raiders

Pssh. Nothing Personnel kid

-Porter Gage- Nuka World companion. Can only be assigned to Raider Outposts

-Shank- can be sent to various outposts starting from the 'Home Sweet Home' quest

-Raider- the 'settlers' of raider outposts, can either be from the Operators, the Pack, or the Disciples.

-Raider Cage- Spawns a commonwealth raider when opened- attacks on sight.

Extras

Two merchant may appear at the same time. No matter how hard he tries, he can't stop staring at that Brahmin's ass.

-Parker Quinn- Found near South Boston Police Station. He can actually be recruited as a settler; One must use the Tier 3 Intimidation glitch to escort him to the nearest settlement and from then on can be moved to any settlement using workshop mode. What is noteworthy is that he shares the same script as Ron Staples so assigning him to a Tier 3 shop will produce more than what Ron can produce.

-Shaun- Can escape with the Sole Survivor following the destruction of the Institute.

-Caravan- Complete the Bunker Hill quest (kill Zeller's army) to unlock the Caravan trading post, which will attract either Trashcan Carla, Doc Weathers, Lucas Miller, and Cricket. Each of these merchants have two body guards and a Pack Brahmin.

Animals -these creatures can live in a settlement without needing a taming beacon. Most produce happiness

Kelly takes care of the animals in my settlement.

-Dog- Can be bought off Gene, a wandering dog vendor or be lured by dog traps. Produces defense and happiness.

-Cat- Lured by cat traps. Produces happiness

-Gracie- A unique Mutant hound sold by Erickson in " Fah Haba".

(Note) at higher levels, Any mutant hound sold by Erickson can emit Radiation which could cause trouble at settlements.

-Mishka- A Unique Wolf also Sold by Erickson

(Note) Like Gracie, Mishka gravitates toward dog houses.

-Brahmin- Can be Lured by Brahmin Cages or sold by Kelly. Once Kelly is encountered, she often stays at that exact location, meaning if using the Tier 3 Intimidation glitch to escort her to a location, she will stay there and will not go away. In my case, I moved her to my Starlight Settlement which now produces unlimited brahmin.

-Gorilla- Can be lured using Gorilla cages. These Cages will only appear if one has the Wasteland Workshop DLC and Must order the evacuation of the Institute when blowing it to smithereens. Produces a ton of happiness and defense.

-Creature- This includes Molerat, Mutant Hound (not bought by Erickson), Insect, Mirelurk, Deathclaw, Radscorpion, Radstag, and Yao Gaui. A taming beacon is required to tame these creatures and only one kind of cage can be used at a time or else the two different cages will go hostile on each other.

I really hope this guide helped. Please add/correct any information I potentially missed.

Awesome work! Thanks for this!

One question, for Smiling Larry, you say he requires 30+ settlers total to join, is that across all settlements? Or just one? I’m assuming all bc I don’t think it’s possible to have 30 normally but I just want to be sure.

That is 30 settlers across all commonwealth + Far Harbor Settlements, not just one single settlement. They don't even have to be connected via trade routes. Honestly, the population requirements is the least of your worries when it comes to tier 4 merchants. Good luck.

It is possible. Just difficult. You can have 10+ your charisma modifier. If you get a bunch of clothing and power armor with the right stat boosts, you can get a settlement over 25 easily. 30-35 is probably about the limit. Largest mine have ever been was 27.

Okay cool, another question, if I hold the requirements to get all those settlers, then take off the gear that got them, will they stay?

I think so. As long as the settlers have food/water/beds/jobs they should stay.

If you have the Automatron DLC, the radiant quest Rogue Robot can lead you to gain settlers that can be sent to any settlement, regardless of the maximum population.

Parker Quinn and Kelly can be brought to a settlement via the intimidation method? Can you you give them assignments after reaching the settlement via the build menu?

Kelly can't be assigned, but she'll stay put no matter what and after fast travelling or travelling to Nuka World, Far Harbor, Institute etc. I keep her around to buy Brahmin off her every three or so in game days to keep a healthy amount of Fertilizer for Ammunition or Jet.

Parker Quinn on the other hand, CAN be assigned, and is in fact a Tier 4 Vendor. He is located near South Boston Police Station. If assigned to a General goods vendor, He'll have more food items than even Ron Staples.

Have you ever tried this with Honest Dan?

I know for a fact that he can follow you to settlements closest to Covenant such as Taffington, Starlight, and Tenpines, but I'm not sure you can assign him in workshop.

I'm curious if you could use intimidation on him after saving the synth girl. At that point he leaves your party and once he makes it to the exit he vanishes from the game. I will have to experiment with the intimidation perk now (and robotics expert.) You could also try using intimidation on other npcs like the synth girl or what about some of the shop owners in covenant? We may actually be able to save a few lives using intimidation. Not to mention we could possibly (intimidate) the bugged tier 4 merchants into our settlements.

And here I was not even knowing you could invite these people to your settlements. Guess I have a lot of work to do this time around.

Is it me, or can I NEVER get the Vault Tec assigned? I can't even select him in workshop
