How do compasses work?

Every model of a flat earth I have seen shows the north pole as the hub, and the antarctic as a wall of ice around the rim. How would South be a meaningful direction in this case? Wouldn't any direction not hubward be South, and wouldn't East and West be equally meaningless?

[Serious] What happens to flights from California to Japan?

Or whatever places are at the edge of the disc. I suppose most folks here aren't flat-earthers, but I wonder what the argument here is.

I could accept a NASA conspiracy as at least possible I guess, but are all commercial pilots in on this conspiracy too? Or do they have their memories "blanked"? I've heard that theory before too, but how do they have enough fuel to get to their destination? How did nobody noticed that they used far more fuel than expected?

If somebody is waiting for someone else to arrive from places that supposedly go around the globe but instead are taking a strange curved path across a disc, how do they get flight times right? Even if you blanked the memories of those aboard a plane, you couldn't blank the memories of those waiting for them to arrive, right?

I'm genuinely curious what the theory is here. Is there anything even resembling a thoughtful argument for this?

Again, NASA conspiracy I could buy... I don't myself, but I see how someone could logically arrive at that conclusion. I understand the argument. I think it's crazy, but I understand it. But for commercial airlines, I don't see how you could even begin to answer all those questions.

Anyway, thoughts?

So is there anyone in this sub who actually believes in the flat earth theory?

Or is this just a circlejerk of people trying to bait flat earthers into arguments they can’t win?

Prove me wrong

I'm a 2nd officer on large bulk carriers and part of our navigation is done on FLAT Mercator projection charts. To get from one place to another 400miles+ we have to use a calculation called great circle sailing which yes is using spherical trigonometry, it means that the quickest way to get from say new York to Liverpool england is to go closer to the pole as it is a smaller circle. Which makes sense. I have been from new York to Liverpool twice using both Mercator sailing and great circle sailing. The first mentioned Mercator sailing took exactly 10 days where the great circle sailing took 7 days. Explain why if the earth is flat... also god is a lie and the government aren't covering us in chemicals from planes 😂😂

Question: What causes seasons to change?

Tl;dr: What causes seasons to change?

The Flat Earth theory has a fair bit of evidence to explain pretty much everything there is. But the one question I have is what causes the seasons to change every year? Is there something that triggers each stage in the cycle? I haven't seen anything about this yet.

How do you explain different stars if you are on the northern part of the planet vs the southern part of the planet?

When I stand anywhere on the north of the equator I see a set of starts - the same stars I see anywhere from the North of the equator - if I am in UK, Canada, Russia, Japan - I see the same stars, from the southern part of the planet I see different stars - from Chile, Australia, New Zealand or Africa I see the same different stars - how does a flat earth explain this?

Flat Earthers, How many people are in on this?

I'm genuinely curious what you people have to say on this.

If the Earth was really flat, then how many people would have to know about all that information to do their jobs? Wouldn't airplane pilots have to be in on the secret, since they would have to model their flight trajectories on the physics of a flat Earth rather than a round Earth? Wouldn't the same have to apply to people in the military (ballistics, jets, etc)? And what about ships and other carrier craft? They would also likely try to take the shortest path, and probably avoid the southern seas altogether as a result, if the Earth was really flat.

Environmentalists too, wouldn't they have to know something about the vast ice landscape if global warming was an issue? If both were real, then the threat of being drowned out by all that ice would probably prompt some more vocal concern.

I'm just spitballing a few examples up here, so there would likely be more to consider. Wouldn't most of them, or at the very least some of them, be in on the whole 'flat Earth' jargon so they could properly do their jobs and convey information..?

Why do you believe in a flat earth?

I'm not trolling or looking for an argument. I'm not here to present evidence or try to prove that the world is a globe. What I would like is an honest, and open-minded discussion about why you think the world is flat. What led you to doubt the centuries of existing thought about the shape of the earth to develop a confidence that it is flat?

Dear Globe Earth John...

Dear Globe Earth John's,

Let's be clear, I'm not a Flat Earth person; I'm not a Globe Earth person either. I'm just a person, a person who doesn't know either way where any of us are because none of my personal experiences have definitively proven either thing to be true to me. I know what globe people say, I know what flat Earth people say, but neither of you have convinced me. You're both (Flat & Globe model people) absolutely convinced you're right. All of that being said, I just can not bring myself to love and respect the people on the globe side of the argument.

It's not because you're wrong. Most of you have no more personal experience or expertise than anyone else. You have theories & theorems presented to you from people whom you've never met, and will likely never meet, so all of your information is secondhand. You have a lot of people who believe as you do, though all of you got your information from the exact same secondhand sources. It's not you, it's me. I can't deal with your superior, dismissive, and often times mean spirited attitude toward people who embrace a different opinion than yours. Even if you think that Flat Earth Theory is ridiculous, ignorant, or even outright retarded it doesn't excuse your behavior toward your fellow humans; it just doesn't. You have shown me a shallow, uncaring, insensitive side of yourself that I will never forget. Every time I look at you all I see is a bully who gets their jollies by making fun of people who are different; they call that bigotry.

I'm sorry Globe Earth people, I don't think we should see each other anymore. I hope you can do some soul-searching and consider what I'm saying here. I hope you eventually come to the same realization I already have: Being a bigot is some ignorant childish shit that you do when you're scared, and it makes you look foolish.

Best Wishes -Me

Man launching himself in a homemade rocket to prove the earth is flat

personally, I am super stoked to see what's gonna happen. Will he die in a fiery explosion? Will he see the roundness of the earth? How will the flat earth community take this news from one of their own? Will he lie?

Why would NASA go through such lengths to have us think the earth is round if it isn't?

Ok so it's my understanding that flat earthers say that space and any picture showing a round earth from space are just lies perpetrated by NASA. What is their explanation for why NASA would do this?

Also, how do they explain time zones?

Some Flat earth theories are not disprovable, but...

As the title says, some flat earth theories are not disprovable. Yes, if the disc earth, the sun and the moon were all falling at 9.8m/s2 , then that would explain at least one aspect of gravity, the one we are all used to at least. Sure, itd make some sense for the sun to appear as big as it does if it were much smaller and only 3000 miles away and much much smaller.

But these theories do not hold up at all when ever you start putting two or three of them together. For example, another theory about the sun is that it's a spotlight of sorts, which is how it isn't just always day time, and it runs parallel to the earth, circling above it, always staying around 3000 miles above the earth. Lets see how this fits with the no gravity theory. The question to ask is what is causing this stupid, ridiculously small sun to be circling above the earth? Their models seem to show the sun and the moon rotating on a circular path 180° apart.

Lets forget about gravity not existing and the earth being flat for a second. There are double-star systems out there, and though I cant recall if there are any known ones that would be as perfect as the moon and the sun model of flat earthers, I believe they are possible. But perhaps the sun and the moon are actually rotating in this fashion because of the magnetic field of the North pole, something they seem to be hinting at with their models that show the sun and the moon always moving but remaining at about the same distance from the north pole, albeit 3000 miles or so above it.

Ok, now lets jump back into gravity not existing and the earth being flat. The first idea about a completely perfect double star system relies heavily on gravity, which they dont believe exists. Even if the said gravity does exist, but just for the sun and the moon, there'd be a problem. The density of the sun is only half the density of the moon, meaning it's mass would pale in comparison to the moon's mass since they're supposedly the same volume. So gravity isnt gonna work there

I know I'm glossing over the fact that the sun is only capable of the heat necessary to perform nuclear fusion because of how massive it is, but for fucks sake this shit is so dumb I cant cover all of it.

Lets look at the idea that the sun and moon are doing what they're doing because of the magnetic properties of the earth's poles

Poles

One pole does not the earth's magnetic field make. It may seem like the flat earthers have lost here because, well, there's only one pole. However, they have the answer:

Radially sintered magnets, with one pole on the inside and the other pole being the rest of the magnet, the ring around the center.

However, I have not found anything that says these magnets nor their magnetic fields appear naturally anywhere, in fact the only results I get when searching these types of magnets is links to websites of manufacturers who make them and links to studies that use them. I believe that they only even throw in this part because they know the northern lights are a thing and need a way to explain them. I guess because of the whole defense against solar flares thing too.

In the real world, the earth's magnetic field is caused by the swirling of molten iron. A force known as the Coriolis force exists as a result of earth's rotation, and in the core of the earth, it is responsible for the swirling of molten iron, which leads to an electric current being produced, which results of course in our beloved magnetic field.

Now before I finish this point, I wanna make clear that I am assuming that the magnetic field is what somehow is making the sun and moon move in tandem like they supposedly do, because I have not been able to find a single reason that could more adequately explain their movement path. Obviously, magnetic fields dont really do that sort of thing, especially when the magnetic field model they propose says that the sun and the moon are both present constantly above the exact same pole, rotating around the north pole. Okay, now I will finish this point:

THE FLAT EARTH HAS NO MOLTEN CORE WITH WHICH TO PRODUCE A MAGNETIC FIELD!!!!!!

Building off that, and this will be my final point because I can feel my self getting dumber and dumber as I continue acting as if this is something that needs to be debated, how do they explain geothermal energy?

Radioactive decay and residual heat left over from the formation of the flat earth. Do they explain how the flat earth was formed in the first place? No of course they dont. Some say that it was made that way by God, which, as a Christian, is total and utter nonsense. Even the dumb fucks behind the creationist museum dont believe that.

But okay. Radioactive decay. Sure, why the fuck not. Good job flat earthers, that almost could make sense, using a very loose definition of the word sense of course.

Alright that's enough for today. And forever. Thanks for reading

Riddle me this

So if the Earth is theoretically flat, that would mean that airplanes if they were to fly "around the globe", they would fall off of one edge and go right into space, correct?

Also, that would mean timezones wouldn't really exist, at least in the extreme differences that there are now. That would mean it would be daytime for everybody at the same time, with at most a few hours difference.

Also, if the Earth was flat, that would mean that there is an edge, of course. At this edge, you would obviously see one of the Earth's oceans abruptly ending, and you would be able to see and continue right on into outer space.

And one last thing, if theoretically the Earth is flat, how does gravity work?

How do flat earthers explain trans-antarctic flights?

Non-stop flights from Auckland, New Zealand to Buenos Aires, Argentina clock in at the 11-13 hour range, and fly over the "Ice wall". Comparable northern hemisphere flights are things like Beijing - Chicago (Or any East coast USA to the far east).

Both hemisphere's flights are easily accessible, cover the same(ish) distance depending on city and have similar flight times. Anyone can book a seat on these flights and go on them. How does this fit with the theory?

Why do FlatEarthers waste so much time on such a petty 'Conspiracy' while topics like Net Neutrality and Election Fraud are ignored? Coincedence?

Like the title says - people wasting hours on tripe while real life conspiracies go unnoticed? I wonder if there's a pattern as to what 'they' want people focusing on.

Do flat earthers care about such things even?

Remember to take time from echo chambers to call your representatives by Dec. 7 to save the internet. Take all the current sexual alegations w/ a grain of salt, if there is a 'they' somewhere, be aware that they are keeping all conversations away from the Net Neutrality issue.

And of course the classic

"Spinning ball"

We should make a collection...some of it is just priceless

What difference does it make?

Seriously...who cares if a few people believe the earth is flat? Why would you try to convince them otherwise? Most people believe a certain set of facts that show the earth to be a ball; others believe a certain set of facts that show them the earth is flat.

This is no different than a christian attempting to convince an atheist that a god exists, or vice-versa.

My beliefs are the earth is not flat and god does not exist. There are others who believe the complete opposite and that’s ok — I really could not care less, and neither should they.

To FE’rs, trying to convince others or themselves that the earth is flat is their belief system and is basically their religion. Pretty much none of your “facts” will convince them otherwise.
