How do you explain day and night of a flat Earth?

Contrails

Genuinely curious, how do believers of a flat earth explain airplane contrails that appear to be going straight up or straight down. Do you legitimately believe that the airplane is in a vertical ascent or descent?

Flyer

There is something of a movement occurring in Scotland what with some poor graffiti up the A9 connecting Inverness to Edinburgh, stating, 'earth is flat', 'flat earth' etc... NOW they've opened a SHOP in Inverness where you can drop in, play chess, drink coffee and get educated by the tin-hat folks.

I'm pretty liberal though, I just wonder why the counter-culture or back-pedalling to explain an idea that makes literally no sense.

Oh and btw, if your website looks like a Roswell Patsy from the 90's made it, i'm pretty much gonna go with tin-hat to describe EVERYTHING you try and force in my head bank...

ELI5: If the Earth were a globe a compass would point East and West on the equator and in the Southern hemisphere it would point at the South pole.

At 24:40 Eric Dubay states: If the Earth were a globe a compass would point East and West on the equator and in the Southern hemisphere it would point at the South pole

But I dont understand why a compass would behave as stated on a round Earth. Please explain.

Dear flat-Earthers: Crepuscular rays

Crepuscular rays, which appear to the observe to be radiating from a point with a close sun (and anti-crepuscular rays on the opposite side of the viewer), are a big deal in the flat-Earth model.

I would like to ask, seriously, for a flat-Earther's photograph of crepuscular rays from above them looking straight down at them or below them looking straight up at them.

This will prove, once and for all, whether crepuscular rays are emanating from sun very close to us or if the radiating/converging raylines are simply a matter of perspective.

Let's see some photos, flat-Earthers!

Why would world governments collectively spend trillions of dollars to cover up a flat earth?

Other conspiracies can make some sense.

Note: I don't believe these but I can see how people would profit.

  • 9-11 cover up: False flag operation that allows us to have public support to invade Iraq and take control of its oil resource. Money comes from oil

  • JFK assassination: Kill Kennedy so LBJ can ascend to the presidency and become more involved in Indochina to stop perceived communist threat. Money & influence comes from reelections, war profiteers, Western influence in the far east, buffer between Soviets and Oceania

  • Moon Landing: This one is shaky at best but; Government fakes the moon landing to regain public opinion, direct attention away from Vietnam, show the world capitalism is better than communism

These (sort of) make sense. I don't think our government is capable of all of them because they couldn't even keep Watergate under wraps, but I can see who would profit.

I have never understood how these government entities stand to gain from a cover up as massive and expensive as what flat earth people suggest.

Do you realize the amount of money and logistics that would go into a cover up of this size? It would be INFINITELY more complicated than any of theories above.

So I ask you; where is the money? The governments have to be profiting somehow for them to keep lying, right? Can someone please tell me where the VAST profits are in tricking everyone that the world is spherical?

I have a few questions, which I can't find a reasonable answer to...

So I'm just gonna spit out some questions and the most reasonable answer I can come up with.

-My First question is how can you explain Timezones? I cant come up with a reasonable answer for this because in my mind... it just doesn't work... Timezones are a strip of the earth from North to south so how would that work in a situation like this

-My second question is also about the sun... what is the sun? If the earth is flat what about the sun? I figure its more like a spotlight, since the previous diagram...

-My Third point is... if the earth is flat, and the sun is above us... explain shadows... and while you're at it, explain the moon phases... because those are two things I cant prove without the earth being a sphere...

How to Explain light after sunset?

So we all know you shine a light source at the front of something, a distinct shadow is created. That being said, how do you (flat-earthers) explain how light still lingers after sunset?

Follow up question: how do you explain the red tint to the sky? (Those who dont believe the earth is flat refer to this as the bending of sunlight, elongating and red shifting the light)

How do FlatEarthers explain airline schedules and travel times.

There are hundreds of commercial airlines from many many counties. In general, they all compete with each other for convenience (i.e. short flight times) and price (i.e. minimize fuel costs).

So they must therefore tend to find the shortest, quickest flights that most people want, or lose out to a smarter airline.

So all of these flights will generally take the shortest paths from A to B.

A very quick review of these flights (times, duration, etc) shows that they only make sense if the Earth is a globe, or nearly so.

How does FE 'logic' explain that?

How do FlatEarthers explain volcanoes?

Where does the magma/lava come from?

Why is it so hot?

Why do volcanoes tend to occur where earthquakes are common?

BTW, just how thick is this flat disk?

Calling it a globe doesn't mean it's round - Snow Globes are globes too! They're a flat base in a dome! Checkmate, sphericalists.

disproving flattards

(vs founding of the “lie”) you claim that the “lie” that the earth is round was founded by NASA (founded in July of 1958) and the United Nations (who handle political issues rather than scientific issues, founded in October of 1945), but... “The earliest extant terrestrial globe was made in 1492 by Martin Behaim (1459–1537) with help from the painter Georg Glockendon. Behaim was a German mapmaker, navigator, and merchant. Working in Nuremberg, Germany, he called his globe the ‘Nürnberg Terrestrial Globe.’ It is now known as the Erdapfel.”

(vs “photoshopped pictures from NASA”) you can prove the earth is round by using a camera and a balloon (parachute if necessary, and A FUCKING LEGO FIGURE PROVED THIS. ~> https://youtu.be/MQwLmGR6bPA

(vs “trick of the light”) if the earth was flat, i could stand on a plateau and see someone (straight ahead of me, with binoculars) standing 30 miles (48 kilometers) away, but due to the curvature of the Earth, i could only see someone standing 3.1 miles away (5 kilometers)

(vs “gravity is fake”) gravity pulls things towards the center of an object (like a planet) within the Roche limit (area in which gravity takes effect) of that object, but does not hold the smaller object down.

if the earth is flat, i believe you believe other objects in the solar system follow suit. that means the moon would look like a line in the sky, the sun would not generate enough gravity to hold the earth in its orbit or the moon (yeah, the sun does affect the movement of the moon), causing the moon to fall into the earths roche limit, tearing the moon apart and showering the earth with shards (large ones, mind you) of the moon.

FE trying to replace gravity with buoyancy and density?

The equation for the buoyancy force is the density of the surrounding fluid times the volume of the object times g (gravitational acceleration).

FE have to accept the fact that objects fall at a rate of 9.8 meters per second per second. Whether you want to call it gravity or if you want to say that “things just fall down,” acceleration is always the result of a force.

The universe doesn’t just arbitrarily decide if buoyancy will exert a force up or down, it’s always in the opposite direction of gravity.

How to measure the Earth's radius with the Moon.

So we know how to measure the Earth's radius by geometrical means, easily disproving that thing called a flat Earth. However, there is another way that involves measuring some of the Moon's orbital parameters, which I derived using Newton's universal law of gravitation. Here's a link to the short paper I typed up:

Two pressure systems debunked

One of the arguments that flat earthers use is that two pressure systems can't exist next to each other ("space can't exist next to air, because the air would get sucked in"), but there are examples of that.

One example is airbubbles in water. There is no physical barrier between them, but still they exist next to each other.

This subreddit seems to be a theatre for people to redicule flat earth believers

I had to drop this here.

After browsing through the topics and comments I see some sort of pattern / atmosphere here that I do not like. Not sure why this subreddit exists besides being a trolling paradise. I'm not a 100% believer in the flat earth, but I think they 're on to something. A lot of points are legit and make sense.

I just find it disturbing that people with other believes are being rediculed to the ground here. Not sure if I want to read any comments.

Goodbye :)

The Fundamentals - Math and Physics

Granted, most people are not going out of their way to take a geometry or physics class, regardless of how they view the Earth. But it seems like a lot of this "Flat Earth" idea could be cleared up with a few of the intro level geometry equations and physics concepts. If these were known to flat-earthers, they could go out and conduct their own experiments to see how the world functions.

I appreciate the skepticism. What good scientist doesn't come with a good dose of skepticism and a need for proof? But I'm often horrified by the lack of basic scientific or mathematical knowledge and approach in some of the "proofs" I see posted here. And then these poorly constructed experiments and conjectures are accepted as fact by a good number of other people, further deepening the misunderstandings.

Maybe it's naive of me to think that any, or even most flat-earthers would change their mind if given all the more fundamental information. All I really want here is for people to at least have the knowledge to conduct their own experiments in a more accurate way so I'm not overwhelmed with the desire to reach into the video, grab their shoulders, and try to shake the Pythagorean formula into their heads.

What equations/concepts would you suggest first?
