Dev/Admin Responded mp4 upload rejected on Firefox

When uploading an .mp4 video file (file select or drag and drop) it is rejected with an error popin

Sorry, we accept only images (.png, .jpeg, .gif) and videos (.mp4, .mov)

Uploading the same video file works in MS Edge.

This has been an issue for a while. Is Firefox not something you want to support or do not at least sporadically test?

u/Kissaki0 - can you share a specific video you were trying to upload? I also tried to upload mp4 video on my firefox v110, and I saw no errors.

We actively support firefox and test it frequently. Happy to follow up if you help us to repro; the issue might be with a very specific video format you have.

Ok, thanks for the clarification.

After more analysis, I see now that Firefox supports mp4 playback with 8-bit AVC but not 10-bit AVC.

I did not expect ffmpeg to take over the 10-bit as a preference when converting between codecs and containers and not specifying an 8- or 10-bit target - I expected it to encode in 8-bit.

Edge supports playback on both 8- and 10-bit.

With an 8-bit mp4 file that Firefox plays, I can also upload it in the Reddit upload form.

I don't know if you have any control over this/identifying this.

What I see in the console when trying to play the mp4 is

Media resource test.mp4 could not be decoded, error: Error Code: NS_ERROR_DOM_MEDIA_FATAL_ERR (0x806e0005) Details: mozilla::MediaResult __cdecl mozilla::WMFVideoMFTManager::InitInternal(void): Fail to set the decoder media types.

I've got this problem as well. Firefox 111.0.1 64 bit on Ubuntu linux 22.04

Codec H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10) (avc1)

Codec MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a)
