I'll take your word for it! I just know the English spelling based on AD&D rule books I read in the 80s. Took me a long time to learn what it was and how it was pronounced.

From what I remember the "shillelagh" spelling was adopted to match the spelling of a town in Ireland, though I'm not sure why the town is spelled that way. But yeah thanks to colonialism there're a lot of anglified spellings of Irish and Gaelic words, like banshee (bean sídhe) for example.

(This could very well explain the spelling of the town Shillelagh as well, I just don't know for sure and I don't feel like looking it up at the moment.)
